If your tank is empty and your sensor isnt functioning, I'd start there. Here's the location, drivers side on the pulley end.

Wouldn't hurt to pull the trunk carpet (very easy to do) and check for leaking coolant in the trunk. The expansion tanks are known to yellow and crack with age.
