I just had a horrifying thought - what if I am completely wrong here and I have actually blown an internal engine component that is transmitting pressure from cylinder to the cooling system. I know the head gaskets are rock solid on an M96 but that could do it? Cracked cylinder I would think would cause serious intermixing of fluids and very slim chance of pressuring the coolant system. Ring failure wouldn't pressurize the coolant system, I don't think.

Not to scare you even more, but that's a common method of failure in Subarus: Failing HG causing pressure into the coolant system. You can often see the bubbles coming up in the expansion tank. No oil/coolant intermix, generally. I don't know if the same happens in the M96. And like you said, M96 HGs are rock solid.

I knew about the ring land failures for the subies, didn't know about the bad head gaskets. My test today certainly isn't conclusive, I need to see what happens when I run it under load. If it leaks then, compression and leak down tests will be in order. I appreciate the heads up though, I will do some reading in them tonight.
