I am only speaking from experiences from 18 years ago, but at one time my household had a 986 and a 996 C4 at the same time.

The 996 was great, fast and extremely fun to drive, however the boxster while slower was easier to toss around.

I feel like the 996 just had too much bulk in the back, more of a GT while the 986 was a mid-engine true sports car that got lots of flack for being a "hairdresser" car.

I say if you just want a weekend toy, go for the Boxster and do not look back.
