Smile Tell of 'OTHER' Favorite Porsches that you've owned !

My only other Porsche was an 87 911 Carrera coupe that I bought back in '95.

It was guards red with the whaletail and front spoiler, black leather seats, broken sunroof and some other minor issues. I paid only $13.5K for it ..... it had 103,000 miles.

The paint was original and in excellent shape except for needing compounded out and a scratch on the door fixed. The 16" Fuchs were faded too. After I restored the car, I'd have to say that was one of the coolest looking Porsches on the Planet. From the 78 SC on through to the end of the 80s, THAT style of Porsche drew alot of attention and was a great looking car. I need to find another before they all go away.

Weird things about my car were:

It used a lot of oil. Depending on where the motor stopped, it would either restart with no smoke, or restart with a big cloud of smoke. Luckily when I sold it, it started with no smoke
The heater was not designed very well..... but there is only so much you can do on an aircooled car. The suspension was super stiff. I don't know how far from stock mine was, but it was brewtal over the bumps !

The motor made 214 or 217 horsepower depending on who you wanted to believe. Nice torque curve and top end rush. That car too had the best brakes I've ever experience up until I bought the Boxster. The handling was tricky but challenging after I got to know the car's funky traits a bit better.

Anyway, it was a cool car for the money. It was funny driving around a $13,000 car like that when other people were paying $13,000 for a Toyota Corolla. It was a great deal ..... I sold it 3 years later for $17,500 ..... and that was probably too cheap.

To mention a few...

I have my 86 911 Targa, I have owned the car for about 11 years and have no plans to part with it, it's a great car and like part of the family

I had a Red 88 951 for about 8 years, sold it with over 200K miles on it, still looked great and ran well. I miss that car, before that I had a White 87 951 with a K27S Turbo and many mods, that car was a monster and dyno'ed at around 350hp to the wheels, it was stolen and trashed.. had only 58K miles on it.
I also have owned an 85.5 944 that I sold to a friend about 8 years ago and he still has it, my first Porsche was a black 86 944.
I may have missed one

Just traded in my other two favorites (Subaru Impreza GT Turbo tuned by Prodrive and a BMW e30 M3) for a new favorite to be:

A Mitsubishi EVO 8 MR RS tuned by Ecutek.

The RS means its the lightweight rally version so updated suspension, short steering rack, short close ratio 5 speed gearbox, proper mechanical limited slip differentials, and no luxury at all. However it does produce 360bhp at about 1350kgs.

Boy oh boy does this make my BoxsterS feel slow. So I guess the EVO is my new "other favorite"...

i love those EVO's(in white!) I would prefer the reliability of STI drive train but
I wouldn't pick up a girl in EITHER. Sooooo loud and that spoiler???

MG how did you end up with a pre-g50 911?

before the 2002-2004 996, I always thought the slant nose 911's were the coolest.... well after the 928 that car really was wayyy ahead of its time.

Well remember, I bought the car 11 years ago! I was looking for a Targa and ran across this perfect 25K mile car... it was love at first sight
The 915 tranny does not bother me at all, kinda add's to the "old" 911 feel
(Bonus: The 915 keeps my wife from driving it!)

My first Porsche was a 68 912 purchased with the engine in the back seat. The original crank had snapped and I built the engine with a super 90 crank and NPR pistons. It was my commuter and I drove it 35 miles each way to work for many years…until the crank broke. I rebuilt the engine once again and sold it to a guy from Germany who shipped it back.

I also bought an early 914 from a friend of my then girl friend who said “it just stopped running on the freeway”. Purchased as another commuter car, it just sat in my driveway while I maintained and drove my 912. I sold it locally to someone more interested in it than I was and gained some parking space at my home.

The next Porsche was a 67S. Again, not running because the previous owner had installed an aftermarket steering wheel and had put in the turn signal cancelling plate upside down and toasted the wiring as a result. I replaced the wring section from a junker I parted out (in my driveway…my neighbors love me) and all was well. I did a ground up restoration on the 67 taking 17 years in the process and sold it recently through a dealer in Newport Beach. I got to the point that it was just too nice to drive, and it didn’t respond well to just sitting in my garage.

The Boxster is the first Porsche that wasn’t delivered to me on a flat bed in a non running condition. Amazing.

Hi,

'68 912 here also. Pristine Guards Red/Tan car I bought from a divorce sale in '74 w/ 18k on the ODO.

Nice car, no stories. I kept it for 4 years and sold it for $3k more than I had in it, bought a '74 Lotus Europa Big Valve Twin Cam Special - John Player Special. Miss that 912 now though, the Europa too for that matter...

Happy Motoring!... Jim'99

I was looking at a really clean 912 a year ago but was concerned it would be hard to get parts for. It was a good deal and thinking back I should have gone for it.

1974 914 1.8 Liter

My last Porsche was also a mid-engine - a 1974 914 1.8 liter engine, with dual Webber carbs. I had that entire engine rebuilt. It was like pulling teeth to get one guy to do any work but he did do a nice job on the Webber carbs. I still remember (this was 1984 BTW) one time I went over to see if he had done anything (shop was in Bentonville, AR) and while I was walking around the shop I noticed he had a KKK calendar on one of the walls!!!!!! HE was a member!!! Never went back to that nut, but never had trouble with the carbs either! That car is one reason I wanted a boxster - I always liked that mid-engine feel...!

My first was a used 66 912. Along the way a new 70 914-6, 70 911T, another 914-6, and a new 84 944.

My favorite was the silver 911T which I converted to 2.5 S specs with one piece Scheel bucket seats and a 100L racing tank. I can hear (and feel) that factory sport muffler at 8000 rpm on the Ortega Hwy.

It is probably still in SoCal, last seen restored in beautiful black/black in 1979 after my ex had stuffed into a San Diego off-ramp, and my insurance company totalled it out as too expensive to fix. :ah:

My first Porsche was the Volksporsche, a 72 914 1.7 Spent much time fixing and welding on that one. It had the major and common problem of being severly rusted under the battery, glad to get rid of that one!

The next was my very favorite car (next to the new Boxster) 1989 928 S4, I loved that car. Fast, comfortable and plenty of room for stuff in the back. And even driving every day around S. Cal I would only see another 928 about 1 X per month. Sharks rule!

And yes, for all the gloom and doomers here. The 928 also had RMS issues! Fortunatley not my car tho.

Garage
1986 944 purchased in 1988 (I was 23). It was Guards Red with brown interior. It had the 15" telephone dial wheels. I bought my first set of aftermarket wheels for this car. I upgraded to a set of 16" Ronal R-9 wheels in black with Pirelli tires from Tirerack. I believe the 2.5 made 140 HP.
