New convertible top install, not seating correctly

Hey everyone, I’m away at college so my dad installed an 03 top that I bought on my 01. The only issue is that the back of the top is laying on top of the clamshell. See the pictures and let me know what you think. He said he just wants to take it to a shop but it looks to me like it’s not that big of a deal. Any advice is appreciated!

Looks like your dad made a valiant attempt but that top is not installed correctly. The rubber seal that’s resting on top of the lid should be below it. There are three really good videos on YouTube and one not so good but all detail the process. One is in Spanish but hey, you really don’t need the commentary once the others have been viewed. It’s definitely a tricky job that takes finesse but certainly doable. Watch the videos, see where he got off track, disassemble to that point and start again. I’m sure he can do it. Show us the results when it’s finished. Good luck.

You have a top made for an 03/04 Boxster with a 4 bow frame. Your dad did a great job but your 2001 Boxster has a 3 bow frame. You need to source a top "with rear glass rear window for a 97-02 Boxster", not a top for an 03-04 Boxster.

Niceboxster please clarify:

1.The new glass window top , is it installed on the old 3 bow frame ?
2.Or is the new top installed on a 4 bow frame ?

If the answer is # 1 the top has to be completely removed from the frame and replaced with a 4 bow frame . Then the top needs to be reinstalled .

If the answer is # 2 then additional tucking/pulling/tightening/fastening has to be done to get it right .

Looks like a 4-bow roof frame to me.

This is the tutorial I used when I installed an ‘04 top/frame on my ‘02 base. Easy install if you follow the directions. Only adjustment necessary was some minor tweaking of the pushrod lengths for top to close and latch properly.

Have your dad undo what he has done and then follow this tutorial.

Good news is even though Dad might be bummed, he can easily have that top off the car in under 2 hours while the install is fresh in his mind! Ask me how I know....
