Mysterious electrical device.

I was changing the evap valve on my Boxster's fuel filler pipe today and found some sort of electrical sensor hanging in there. It's rod-shaped, about 1 1/2" long and 3/16" in diameter, with an 8" lead on it that has a connector on the other end. If someone can tell me what it is and where it is supposed to go I would really appreciate it.
