Mysterious electrical device.

I was changing the evap valve on my Boxster's fuel filler pipe today and found some sort of electrical sensor hanging in there. It's rod-shaped, about 1 1/2" long and 3/16" in diameter, with an 8" lead on it that has a connector on the other end. If someone can tell me what it is and where it is supposed to go I would really appreciate it.

Year would help.
Pics?

If your car is '97-'04, you need to have this PDF factory parts catalog. The expanded drawings should help you identify your part/number. They also have the newer catalogs if needed.

Please introduce yourself and post a pic of your car. Most of us are friendly and will be glad to help. Although some will bite when provoked. Safe travels.

Haha... that's awesome. ;)

You're not talking about the Fuel Door Lock, are you? "Rod Shaped" and in that vicinity made me think about this.....

I have been there, it is a sensor, if you look close it should be captured by the assembly that held the evap valve, it should be held laying on the fill tube.

Thanks for all the responses! Special thanks to rexcramer for the parts pdf--I've been really frustrated by all the errors and omissions in the dealer parts diagrams. When I get some time (this weekend?) I'll introduce myself and my 2000 Boxster more formally.

It's probably the OSVR reed contact which sits inside the bleeder valve just under your fuel filler. The bleeder valve has an orange circular face on it. There's a good article in pelican parts that shows you where it goes but there is an obvious recess inside the valve. Without it fitted, you may have a problem filling up. This is an issue that I've had for a while as my car doesn't have one nor can I find the wiring for it!!!

In fact if you can take a picture of the connector on the other end in place and where it leads to I'd be eternally grateful...
