Yes.... serious pain in the arse. Im not sure i'd do it again without lowering the motor first.

Seriously; it's that bad.

Its a real wrestling match and I got my ass kicked.

Like you, I wanted to get to the injectors and fuel rails. I spent hours removing everything that I could to get enough room and was still never able to get the stock airbox out. In the end, I gave up on the airbox and just removed the injectors with the air box still in there. I hate that f%&*cking thing.

Final Score
Stock air box = 1
Stone = 0

I am about to install a 911 plenum and 3 inch silicone hose section a new "cold air intake" with an inline air canister filter... from what i have read is that it is nearly impossible to salvage the 986 box and the easiest way since i do not plan on putting it back ever again is take vice grips and break the box in sections till you can get to the bolts. Takes about 15 minutes and I am salvaging the MAF sensor tube so that is the only area i need to be careful around.

Are you planning to use the 986 MAF housing with your new plenum? Are you staying stock tb?

Yes keeping stock MAF housing/ cutting right up to stock air box for use with rest of 3 inch piping (there are some aftermarket alum MAF housing kits but i found a lot of mixed reviews on the quality of the alum)... and I have a cayman/ 911 (996) TB that is 74mm i believe that bolts onto the plenum.

I am also installing a oil catch can in the trunk in line with the stock AOS (replacing that as well for prev. main.) as my boxster just crossed 96k (2002 S)
