what is this oil filter spring?

was doing an oil change an saw this in my drip pan. I'm sure it goes into the oil pedestal area and the filter attaches but just to be sure i had to ask.

the part I'm talking about is in this thread. so apparently it sits at the base of the oil filter housing?

I've never seen on of those things. From the verbiage it seems this is an adapter that fits inside the factory filter housing, to allow one to use a non-standard length filter cartridge. That's just a guess, and I'm gonna feel really bad if everyone else has one.

Yes it fits in the bottom of the oil canister.

Whatever the reason, do yourself a favor and change your filter housing. It is cheap (about 25 usd) compared to a blown engine !

Some folks on this forum talk about replacing the housing about every other oil change.
Or maybe consider upgrading to a spin on ?


If it were me I wouldn't put this back on.

I put it back on.

Put the spring piece on one end of the oil filter and inserted it into the housing till i felt it click into place. Drove 50 miles home no problems, first few miles after an oil change always has me paranoid though. looking in that rear view for an oil trail.
