I'd take a look at the front pads. Do they have a lot of slop in them, as they can move around in the caliper front-to-back? If that is the case, there is your problem. Some pads come with shims that fit over the ends of the pads to address this very issue. If they are missing or damaged, you'll hear the pad clunk sometimes. When going forwards, the pads are always against the caliper because the rotation of the rotors pulls the pads forward in the caliper. That is why you would hear it when backing up.
