Slick 50 in with gearbox oil

			Hi Chaps and Chapettes.
Got my manual 2000 S booked in for is bi yearly brake fluid change in 2 weeks As the car has just clicked over to 100K im going to get the gearbox oil done too.

The gearbox is fine but does have the normal problem of being a bit tight going into second when cold, once its warmed up its fine.

When I was telling my old school mechanic about this he says if I buy some slick 50 he will mix it with the 75/90. He is 100% confident it will be a lot better.

Ill let you know the out come but Im betting some of you guys have done it before.

Peter

My car had the same symptoms as yours does, and it was a huge improvement refilling with the genuine gear oil.
Forgot additives and use genuine Porsche gear oil.
Many have tried other products just to drain it and go back to the factory fill. Save yourself the bother of doing it twice.

Personally, I am not a fan of additives. The 997 crowd is big on Mobilube PTX. Designed for Porsche gearboxes. I would probably try PTX before Slick 50.

I wouldn't put "slick 50" in anything, personally. Oil additives are by very definition "band aids", and I've seen them do much more harm than good, over the years.

I went through this with my case recently, when I acquired it. I did a TON of reading, because I'm a royal purple and redline oil fan, and I intended to use one of those products in the gearbox. I eventually had to concede; with the preponderance of bad experiences using anything other than Porsche OEM fluid in the gearbox, that I didn't want to do it twice. I hit up suncoast and used the OEM. I've been very, very glad I did.

Ymmv, but that's my opinion.

Yes. My car has 147,000 mi on it, and that gearbox works beautifully now.

Geeez, I didn't realize they even made that stuff anymore. I remember selling it at the quick oil change shop I managed as a teen.

Yep, on the same page as BoxsterSteve and Maytag. Use the real thing. Expensive but you will not regret it.

Yep, another for the Porsche goo. Pay the $$$ it's not like it has to be done every 3k. You will likely never need to do it again.

This is the part number from the PET

999 917 546 00
transmission oil
HYPOID
1 LTR.
container

I purchased mine from the local Porsche dealer and the part number on the container is

996 917 546 00
75W90 Hypoid Gear Oil

I would think a UK Porsche dealer would have some in stock. It is used in all 996/997 and 986/987 6 speed manual transmissions and maybe others.
