I did that on my 2000... cleaned the MAF even though it was behaving and not coding. Figured at 14 years old, it might be necessary.
Fargin’ bastidge failed almost immediately afterward.
If it’s not misbehaving, you might consider leaving well enough alone.

I’ll check the intake tract when I change the filter. If it’s not oily / dirty, I’ll leave the MAF alone.

PO had installed a K&N air filter. I had one on my mustang GT so I was familiar with them. I never had any issues with either. Ran the Oiled filter in the Box for a couple of years. I did switch to regular dry filter. I was going on 2000+ mile road trip, wanted clean air filter and did not want to add another variable to the drive event. I have stayed with the dry filter since

Yes, don't touch the MAF if its behaving, you WILL regret it if you do.
