Ack - oiled air filter

Just discovered that sometime in my 986’s past a P.O. had installed a BMC oiled air filter :barf:

At least it doesn’t appear to have been over oiled. Don’t have any fault codes so I’m just going to install a new Mahl before I button it back up. Why people do this is beyond me.

I'd clean the MAF while you're in there, just to make sure it's cleaaaan. :D

I did that on my 2000... cleaned the MAF even though it was behaving and not coding. Figured at 14 years old, it might be necessary.
Fargin’ bastidge failed almost immediately afterward.

If it’s not misbehaving, you might consider leaving well enough alone.

I’ll check the intake tract when I change the filter. If it’s not oily / dirty, I’ll leave the MAF alone.

PO had installed a K&N air filter. I had one on my mustang GT so I was familiar with them. I never had any issues with either. Ran the Oiled filter in the Box for a couple of years. I did switch to regular dry filter. I was going on 2000+ mile road trip, wanted clean air filter and did not want to add another variable to the drive event. I have stayed with the dry filter since

Its not the end of the world. BMC is a quality filter.

True, they’re well known in the motorcycle world. I’m not anticipating any problem with the MAF because the filter appears to have been oiled properly (not over oiled). I’m just not a fan of these in fuel injected vehicles running in dusty environments.

I’ve had two MAF’s fail after cleaning (not Pcar) so I just leave them alone now. If there are MAF related issues I would rather just replace it.

When I purchased my Box 2 years ago, I went through and checked the air filter and discovered it was a K&N clogged with debris. I changed it to a OEM filter after a year, I cleaned the K&N re-oiled it and use it. The sound from the intake is much more pleasurable with the K&N. I never checked the MAF as I have not codes.

Yes, don't touch the MAF if its behaving, you WILL regret it if you do.

Agreed, leaving the MAF alone until it codes.
