If you are totally risk averse, a Boxster or any other older high end sports car, is not for you. I have owned mine for three years and she is absolutely one of the best purchases of my life. At almost 19 years old she runs and drives like a brand new car, and looks fantastic. The fun factor and permagrin while driving her more than offsets the purely financial side of ownership. If you are going to play, then you have to pay! If she does blow up, I'm sure that I will briefly question my decision making. But that won't erase the joy of the experience.
Life is meant to be lived. Driving a Boxster certainly makes you feel alive!!

Well said! That's why most of us are here. Sh#t can and does happen. Plan for it. Now would I be devastated in my M96 went ka-boom - yes, I would. But I try to take all steps I can to make sure that won't happen. But remember, as others have said, these cars are 13-20 years old.
In the meantime, it's a nice early winter day here in New England, and as soon as my car is done at the indie (having her annual check-up, and getting braided brake lines installed) I plan on feeling alive later today!
Carpe Boxster!

I'll just stick to my 86 air cooled 911 and you can have fun in your ride. I was just stating that reliability is no more with the water cooled 986s. This is a 986 forum and I respect that you enjoy your rides but reading the op's situation makes me not opt for a 986.

So, you've only read one scary news story?
My point is that the post said nothing about the engine failing due to an IMSB failure and even if it did, the rate of failure is small and the issue completely overblown. Engines are complex and any engine in any car can fail. By your logic, you should never do anything, ever.
You don't own a 986 and say that you won't buy one, yet you're posting on a 986 board.
I think the kids call that "trolling".

I'm sorry to hear about the engine failure.
I bought my 986 550SE less than 1,5 years ago and have been drivning it 20000 km. It's been perfectly reliable. I was a bit worried about all the IMS tales at first. It even got me thinking never to buy a Boxster or 911 once.
Now that the 986 are priced the way they are. I could not pass the opportunity.
I won't change the IMS. Not even thinking about it until the day the clutch go or I get indication that I may save the engine in time. Life is to short to worry. That way you can never enjoy the car. I will be keeping my 550 SE long term. I drove a 987 and to be honest. It was a bit dull with bigger wheels. More Audi like interior. The 986 are still a simple roadster. The newer versions are more grown up and mature.

Agreed. The IMS replacement should be seen as part of the clutch replacement. That said, I would worry about an early 986 with an original bearing. I wouldn’t risk a single row IMS bearing for long.
