Was the IMS change done with a pre-installation procedure (was the prior-IMS failing? was the engine already contaminated?)? Pro-active replacement? Prior owner?

I'd take the metal bits, place them on a clean kitchen towel and once the oil was off them, use the magnet. Bits can be copper, aluminum or iron. Not to mention plastic and sealant.
