Metal particles on oil filter. Please help.
 

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum. Please help.


I just did oil change on my 2001 boxster, and found some metal particles on the filter.

My car had LN engineering IMS bearing updated not long ago.


Is this normal wear or IMS bearing failure ?

Are they ferrous?

Looks like plastic to me, as in chain ramps. The darker stuff, that is.

The tiny bits of metal look like aluminum, but as particle says, check them with a magnet.

I am not 100% sure. I used a magnetic pickup tool to pick it up, since the oil is too sticky, it always stick to the magnet. But I feel like it is because of the oil, because it has to touch it to pick it up. I will try it again tomorrow.

The bottom 2 photos are plastic , but the first 4 photos are silver metal. Not 100% sure ferrous or non ferrous.

I am planning to install a LNE spin-on filter and a magnetic drain plug for now.

Note question about ferrous ?
From the color and size,most likely chain ramp pads disintegrating.
If you fit a filter with a steel case, consider placing some small rare earth magnets on the case.

If the metals are ferrous metal, is it 100% ims bearing failure or it has a chance of not so major problem and normal wear ?

Was the IMS change done with a pre-installation procedure (was the prior-IMS failing? was the engine already contaminated?)? Pro-active replacement? Prior owner?

I'd take the metal bits, place them on a clean kitchen towel and once the oil was off them, use the magnet. Bits can be copper, aluminum or iron. Not to mention plastic and sealant.

Most "normal" ferrous wear debris is very fine black dust. If you have chunks, you have problems.

JFP, are you saying the tiny silver particles indicate a problem? The volume is so low, I wouldn't have suspected any issue. Now the black plastic bits look a lot more numerous and more of an issue, but I'm no where near as knowledgeable as you, so hope you'll clarify.

Are those "tiny silver particles" ferrous?
