I just had my IMS bearing replaced (dual row, 2000 Boxster S, 86k kms) during a clutch replacement.
My mechanic was heavily against IMSB replacements so we agreed to decide once the transmission was down and he could inspect the existing bearing.
After inspecting the current bearing he was rather shocked to find the existing bearing with significant play both in-out and up-down.
So I had it replaced with an equivalent bearing, with the plan being replacing it alongside every clutch.

Sounds like a standup honest mechanic. Very good.
