I had a steel version. Liked the look, but I need a date feature on my watch. I know people say you can look at your phone, but I want it on my watch. Waiting for them to make one with a date. They prob won't ever do that though...

I'm not a collector of Seiko watches but I still wear this Seiko that my wife bought me in 1986. I think she paid $85 at the time. eBay says that its still worth $50-$75.
Its never been repaired and has always kept great time. If it ever stops working, then maybe I'd be forced to find a replacement (probably a Bell & Ross) but that might never happen.

Thanks...they are actually priced very reasonably now in the used market (under $3k). I like the large double date windows (easier to read for my older eyes), and that I don't have to screw down the chronograph pushers, so there's no delay when you feel like timing something. I have technically nicer watches, but this is my favorite for versatile wear. Nice size too- 44mm in diameter.

Wow, there are some high-end watches here! I do have an Omega, but I hardly ever wear it because it's so expensive and I don't want to scratch it!
I just bought this solar Seiko last weekend; I went to have a battery replaced in one of my low-end watches when I noticed that the jewelry store was having a clearance on all Seikos - 50% off. I noticed this very cool chronograph, and picked it up. I rarely make impulse buys, but I really like the watch, and it was pretty cheap after the discount. It's a Jimmy Johnson Special Edition Solar. Although Jimmy Johnson is a true Wheel God, that isn't why I bought it, I just like the looks of it.
Some cool stuff in this thread. I have always loved watches, but anything worn on my wrist is generally scratched and smashed within a couple weeks. If I buy jewelry to keep in a box, it's for my wife. After going watchless for a few years, reading this thread I'm thinking of going back to my old standard the Casio Databank. I probably had nearly a dozen of them since they first came out in the 1980s including a voice-memo model. Not the high end stuff that many of you are interested in, but accurate, rugged, and an amazing array of function before the days of smart-phones. One time in the mountains between Honduras and Guatemala a man approached me with a jar of raw opals and offered to trade them for my Casio. I declined because it was full of phone numbers, pass-codes, and other data I needed in daily life.

Similar to pidj, I work in technology but have no interest in a smartwatch. My dad passed on an Omega Speedmaster Schumacher edition a couple of years ago that's my go to. The yellow face can be a little noticeable though. My brother gave me a solar powered Sieko for being his best man - it's a beautiful dress watch. Then, being a child of the 80s, I have quite a collection of Swatches - both old and new. I can rarely pass a Swatch store without buying at least one.
I find it interesting how many "car guys" also have an extensive collection of watches. This has come up on several forums I frequent. Both my dad and brother fit the mold too. Passion for cars and nice watches.

I have 5 of them and they all keep good time and offer a lot of quality for the money They hold up well and are very good looking too. I always get a lot of compliments on them. Have you seen the Sistem 51 Swatches? They developed a 90 hour power reserve automatic that is assembled with just one screw. I have being thinking of picking one up as a beater. To your second point, I think appreciating great engineering may having something to do with it!
