ADVICE: Keep current 17's or go with 17" Sport Classics

I'm on the fence about buying a set of 17" Sport Classic Wheels for my '97:



My car currently has the "standard" 17" wheels (like in this pic):



What does everyone think of the Sport Classics? I love the two piece 19" versions, but being that my car is a '97, don't really want to mess up the frame/suspension. Any feedback is appreciated!

I think what one wants is what they don't have--covet.

I currently have a set of Sport Classics installed and have recently purchased a set of the Turbo Twists 18"

The Sport Classic wheels look great. I would buy them, if I were you.

I have them on one of my cars and a second set waiting to be refinished to go on another. I like them. They are a good looking wheel.

I really like the Standard 17" that you have on there already... save your money and buy a set of the best tires on the market instead!

IMO, keep your current wheels unless you're going to change them to a larger wheel. Those sport classics might look a lil better, but are harder to keep clean. I'd instead use the money on upgrading the exhaust. The base car's single tip exhaust is one of the ugliest things on the Boxster.

I like the stock wheels. Keep it original. But then I like the orange lenses also.

I had a set on my first Porsche - an 01 Boxster S. They look great but get dirty in a hurry and are a pain in the a$$ to clean.

Thanks all for the feedback! Think I'm just going to stick with the stock wheels and get a good set of tires.

I like both, so I keep a car with each. Don't want an extra car? Then go ahead and get the extra wheels.



I do want to get some spacers for my sport classics though. Thinking of 15mm rear, 7mm front to put them at the edge of the fender.

Dammit, that looks good! Like you say, maybe just keep both.

sport classics look way better. Stock twists look crappy. I'd see if you can find a set of 18" turbo twists.

For what it's worth, IMHO, it depends on the color of the car. I looked at a green one with the sport classics and was in love. Ended up buying a silver one with different wheels and kept looking for sport classics. But, when I looked at a few pictures, to me, it was too much silver. Planning to put the $$$ for wheels into suspension or exhaust instead. Also, unless changing wheel size, not as much point in changing wheels.

Though the style of the sport classic is one of my all time favorite wheels. Still somewhat pains me to not have them.

the two piece sport designs are 18" actually, and i think you would have no problem running 18" wheels on a 97. apparently there is a tsb from porsche saying 18" only on 98 and younger, but you could probably swing a stick and hit several hundred folks running 18" on 97 with no issues.

I have sport classics on mine and I think it sets it apart.

Yes, in '98 there were significant chassis and suspension improvements (Rear body structural change included redesigned wheel wells and coil spring mounts, lower engine compartment bulkhead, rear wall crossmember and rear axle mount reinforcements) to allow larger wheels for high speed track use. For the street, as someone has said, there are hundreds who have gone to 17s and 18s on a '97.

The Sport Classics are my favorite by far. Keeping them clean is not that bad, I have a cheap little brush that makes quick work of it. I also use Griot's wheel cleaner.
