Which model year was it when the top got looking good?
Ours is an '01, we only drive it for short little fun outings, but we think we want to upgrade by a few years.
I know they have done subtle styling changes every year, but I recall being blown away maybe back around 2010 when the changes all came together well, particularly the way the top, when up, looks more 911-ish.
What was that step-up model year?

Easy...
....2003 introduced the glass rear window and added another roof bow.

I am talking about the Boxster. Ours is a Boxster S.
Have done a little searching and I think it is the 2012 when the back of the convertible top got a little rakier.

Now I am pretty sure it was 2008
2008 was the first year called Gen 2.
Here is a picture of an '08, and the top's rear shape looks more bubble-like that on our '01

I belive that you are referring to the 981 Boxster launched in 2012. The top is styled to blend into the body lines and not stick out like an afterthought.

I think that is exactly what he is referring to, big improvement in the top lines as every top before that look like an ugly hump

Agreed, the top on the 981 (2012- ) is much flatter and more rakish than the previous "bubble tops".

Also agree. 986.2 (2003-04) did add the 4th bow for a slight improvement in the shape, but it wasn't until 981 MY 2013 it looked really good IMO.

Yup. What a difference that makes over the 986 and 987. Love my 986 but definitely doesn't look as good with the top up.

I like the glass window and rear defroster on my '03S. But I think the top lines of the earlier 986's with one less top bow look cleaner (as do the earlier cars front and rear bumpers) and the rear of the earlier cars' tops is more raked. But from the driver's seat it doesn't matter! And with the top down they look the same!

Couldn't have said it better. Looks are so subjective; beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
