Most of the answers posted are correct or partially correct.
The reading cycle is not based on engine temp cold, warm or hot. The cycle depends on how long the engine has been turned off. The oil needs time to drain back into the oil pan after it's been started. When you first turn off the engine and attempt to take a reading it could take anywhere from 5 min to 10+ minutes cold, warm or hot. If you take a reading first thing in the morning after the engine has been off overnight it will take about 5 seconds to get the reading.
