First of all, you need to have special security codes to program a key that only a dealer can get

$700 is way to high even for 2 keys

a key fob cost at list is ~$185 plus the cost to cut the actual key. You can find new key fobs for around $135 if you shop around. Do not buy on that does not have the barcode tag attached as the key can not be programmed without it

Programming cost at a dealer is around $75-150 for up to 4 keys

do a search and you will find several threads on this subject

I bought a new key from TX dealer and had it and original reprog for $397. I've heard of cheaper rates from other threads too

My experience: Recently took my '98 to the dealer (Bellevue, WA) to have a new key cut and programmed ($15 & $85 respectively). Sunset had the key head for $130 & blade for $24. So, about $260 when all said and done.

Man! Just last week I was b_tching about paying $150 for a new BMW key for my son's 2000 323ci.

BTW, he didn't lose his key, the darn things just quit working.
