I like to drive my 2003 tip I the higher (3K and above) rev range, especially around town etc, but, I am afraid of breaking something, is it harmful to pootle around in 2nd and 3rd gear, gas mileage is not a concern

I regularly approach the rev limiter.

When on the street I'm rarely below 4K -- of course with my exhaust there is a slight drone below 3k -- so I have incentive to hear it sing.

I keep it over 2500 as much as possible and zing it to 6k a couple of times when it's out on a run. I don't worry about mileage; it's a few months a year car, so I don't give a rat's azz if I'm not maximizing economy.
And I never ever lug. I wonder if lugging contributes to stretching timing chains in these motors? Just thinking out loud.

Same here. I have never hit the limiter. 28,000 miles and running strong!

In a racing weekend, I shift near/at redline around 400 times (every upshift). Probably 10 hit the rev limiter. I'd have to check the ECU for the number of downshift over-rev counts - I am sure that there are a few. Then I do this 15 weekends a year; so 6,000 shifts at redline per year. And I do this on the original IMS bearing with 94,000 miles.

These engines are actually pretty tough.

Also drive mine hard. Regularly between 6 and 7k and always above 2K.

Need a new set of rear tires around every 7.000-8.000 km (4.350 - 4.970 miles) (Michelin). So i think not very hard.

And well over here in Germany we have the Autobahn. So sometimes i have to test if my box still runs top speed. But it's a real tire eater if you run full speed for a longer time.

And no, we also have speed limits on the Autobahn. There are less and less Km where you can run at full speed. Also you have to pay attention for overall traffic.

And in general. If it breaks it breaks. But if you don't drive it like you've stolen it you'll never have get the fun thee car could give you. So you could buy a much cheaper car with lower maintenance costs and maybe have more fun, because it will never hurt your purse like a box can do.

I hear you Markus regarding the autobhan, I will not soon forget the day I had my BMW 850 off the peg on a strech of unrestricted road when a Trabant pulled out from behind a big rig, talk about a brown trouser moment :-)

Has happens to me a bunch of times too. This is when you know if you have good brakes and tires!

I whip mine every chance I get. Everytime I drive her I feel guilty if I don't take it to redline just once.

i give it to it good ALL THE TIME! i constantly keep it in the power band and since i got the new exhaust i can count the number of times i've put it into 5th (5 speed manual), i just love the sound and unless i can keep it over 3k i dont upshift, last thing i wanna do is lug the engine, what a crime in such a car.

gas economy? who cares.. i'm not gonna miss out on enjoying the car for an extra 20$ a week, maybe less, even if it is my daily.

125k miles out of which 15k are mine and i wouldnt call them hard because that's the way this engine was meant to run. i think they are very tough engines. i used to have an S2000 and thought that thing can take a beating but the more "pretentious" Boxster can rev with the best of them!

NOTHING more depressing than seeing a Porsche granny driven, brings a tear to my eye..

i love this car!

I am even willing to tune the DME now, after a SKODA octavia combi RS gave me a hard time passing him...A FAMILY CAR.
At 250km/h even my old 2.7l passes most other (newer & more powerful) cars...as they are restricted to 250km/h max...but not Porsche
