for a simple ashtray is how much !!
been searching all over the internet for a simple ashtray insert. but what i find an absolute shocking price of $200. this has to be a joke right, its ridiculous for such a simple item. is this true that you cannot even pick one up off ebay .

I think that the joke is that is a 12.14% discount off the full price:
I see them on eBay (US) from time to time at $35-40. It's still a poorly designed and destined to fail mechanism.
Get this non-smoker insert:
Boxster/996 Non-Smoker Shelf Kit

I have an ashtray if you want to buy a used one. I can send you pictures if you'd like to see it. It is not perfect, but it has never been used for smoking and the lid opens and closes perfectly.

I replaced my never used ashtray with the non-smoker kit just recently. I have a 2000S. Let me know if you're interested.

No light on the non-smoker kit. I converted my ashtray light to LED long ago, so just drilled a small hole in the side of the non-smoker tray and stuck the LED in there.

It's a Porsche part so they should have it on your side of the pond.

I popped the little gear out and heated a small metal post and sank that into the plastic. It follows that track perfectly and works great. You can fix the door yourself if it stops closing.

Whatever you guys do don't use your ash tray as a coin holder.
During spirited driving coins will be launched into the center console and make their way to the shifter mechanism.

When I have change (rarely as I try and get rid of it like the plague) I use the pockets in my shorts/pans come with. Learned my lesson on the impact of loose change in the car a long time ago. sounds like you did too.

Thanks for the timely advice! The ash tray was where I stored my wheel lock key and since I had just replaced my locking lug nuts was thinking I'd use the ashtray for change instead of the change holder in the armrest. Now I won't! Thanks
