10 Years Ago Today...

I joined the Porsche family. I purchased my first Porsche: a 2001 Boxster S w/ 15K mi and CPO from Boardwalk Porsche in Plano, TX. Made the deal (with trade) in 3 phone calls. My sales associate was Davis Speight, who was amazing.

My sister lives in the Dallas metroplex, so I drove down on July 4 and watched fireworks. Prior to arriving, I told her I was coming and it was going to be a quick trip with me leaving the day after I bought the car. She said I should bring my golf clubs along and stay a cpl days. I was in the midst of a horrific golf funk and said I'd be wasting my money if I played golf. She found a coupon and arranged a golf lesson for the afternoon at Hank Haney's golf ranch. So the plan was to pick up the car in the morning and have the lesson in the afternoon.

So we're having breakfast that morning and my sister asks me if I'm excited about buying a Porsche (which happened to also be the most expensive car I'd ever purchased by $10K). I said no, actually I was more excited / nervous about the golf lesson. She said I was crazy.

Got the car and paperwork done and off the ranch. The lesson helped.

I had darker hair back then.

So when did you buy your first Porsche?

October 2012. For my 41st birthday. Spent a week driving S models and last day I was supposed to be there mine was traded in. Cancelled return flight and got to drive home after all. What a great drive L.A. to SLC in your first Porsche.

I could never own another brand. Period.

June 2013, a 2001 base with 120k miles. My brother in law got the car back in 2009, and I've seen it since then, but never got to drive it. He had a second kid, and was selling the car.

At first I didn't like the amber in front and the interior. But he let me drive it for a couple weeks after I said I was interested. I was sold right away after those weeks. Been fixing a bunch of mechanical issues as well as preventative maintenance, now the car is solid.

I never knew how well a car could brake, or not roll, or handle, until I drove the Porsche. Now when I drive other "normal" cars, the not-so-good braking and handling really bug me.

Bought mine in Dec 2009 as a Christmas present for myself. As a kid owning a Porsche was on my list of things to accomplish. Funny now thinking back as I can't remember anything else on that list. Now 6 years later and I own 2. All those years of waiting was worth it!

To be honest, I wanted a 308 GTI like Magnum PI's. I couldn't say what a P car looked like then or what was available. If only I knew then........

June 2014. After cruising craigslist and discovering how affordable the used Porsche market was. I first test drove a Arctic Silver 97' with 76k miles, he talked up the low milage a lot and wanted 10k firm. I was never fond of Silver and I noticed the difference in engine size when I test drove a 2002 base after test driving the 97. I pulled the trigger on a Seal Grey, base model, bone-stock 2002 with 99k miles, spent $10k. Done a lot to it in the last year, especially cosmetic but some mechanical too. The biggest lesson Ive learned from my first ever Porsche (and somewhat annoyingly so): People seem to think you spent a fortune on the car and/or have lots of money. In my case neither is true and it kinda gets tiring explaining the contrary to people. So I dont any more, I just confirm Im loaded and carry on smartly.

3 years ago my wife let me purchase two 914's. One restored and one a project car. Less than a year into commuting with the 914 my wife said I needed one one more modern and encouraged me to start looking. I found my dream P car and told my wife I was ready to jump before she could change her mind.

November, 2010. 1999 with 85K miles. Never owned a Porsche before and had never really wanted to. Thought that I might take it to the track 2-3 times per year. Turned out to be more like 25.

July 2008. After looking at Boxsters for well over a year... I see a 2000S on ebay on a Sunday night, no reserve, ending at noon on Monday, and a local car (by owner)!
I make arrangements to view and drive the car Monday morning and go online and make the place the winning bid. I drive the car home that afternoon. The car had 76K miles and now has a little under 125K. What a blast!

I've actually bought three other Boxsters since and sold them all. This 2000S just seems to be one of the good ones!

September 2014, a 2003 base with 120K miles, now have 126K.
Was looking at a Corvette at that time, but melt for the Porsche.
No regrets at all !

Feb 1982. I was is college and bought a 1967 911; Guards Red, black interior and rusty rocker panels. It was a move up from my air-cooled VW's.

Since then I own/owned a 924, several 944's, several 928's, a couple of 914's, a 996 and a handful of Boxsters. And another Boxster joining the fleet next week.

September 1999, a 1989 944S2 with 18k miles on it. Since then I've had a 1978SC and a 1989 Carrera 4. After the kids didn't fit in the back I went without for about 6 years with terrible withdrawals.

Sept 2012 - My first Porsche. Never thought about a Boxster, only 911s
Three years earlier I had traded my 02 Mustang GT in for an Xterra. I was thinking I want to be an off roader, but I could never take a brand new vehicle into the woods and scratch the hell out of it on purpose. I wanted to go back to a sports car. After month searching my Boxster came up. I sent pics to the wife and she said go for it.
It’s not a 911, it is a first gen Boxster, it looks dated next to a 981

BUT man when I’m driving it, none of that crap matters

Then the Check engine light chimes on – What is it this time?

2004 after 5 years of debating whether I should go for an air cooled 911, a 964 or splurge on a water-cooled 996. Back then old 911's were everywhere for cheap. Some you couldn't give way people were too afraid of spending more on fixing them up snd maintaining them than they were worth. Lotus Elise, M3 and S2000 were also on my mind.

Then I saw this crazy guy Rad at the autocross tossing this 986S around like a kart and realized I'd never driven the car. Every week he and a guy in an E46 M3 were neck and neck on lap times. Then on television I watched F1 driver Tiff Needle and 5th Gear declare the Boxster the best sports car for the money. He was having a ball sliding the Boxster around their test circuit before Chris Harris was even a thing. That got me off the couch to start looking.

That week I went on Ebay and found my car less than 15 minutes away with only 9k miles in the exact engine and color combination I wanted. There was also a low mileage 996 for only $10k more close by in "pulled over by the cops again" yellow. The Acura salesman was right out of college. I told him the test drive would have two parts, the tire warm up part and the look out for smokeys part. He started laughing. Afterwards my first thought was why do you even need a Carrera? This car does everythingeverything perfectly! And $10k stays in my pocket for Apple stock purchases? No brainer.
I didn't even bother checking out the 996 before I started working out a deal with salesman. Incredibly I nearly let the pristine Boxster S get away to some other bidder by only a few hundred bucks. The car was relisted in the salesman's office so I could do the buy it now and capture some state warranty guarentees and financing freebies. They kept the car in their showroom for me until I made room at home by selling my old car, a very perfectly modified Miata that was sold in 10 hours and continued getting calls for months, some asking for the phone number of the new owner. I should have kept both! What a mistake...having two cars might have lessened some of those Boxster bills that were enough to buy the Miata back.

The Boxster was ordered on 1/21/2001 and we took delivery on 4/30/2001. It was my first Porsche and I subsequently bought and sold a 993 cab and a 993 turbo. I still get a thrill out of the car every time I drive it. The car has aged well.... me, not so much!

March 2014. My wife and I were picking up one of our Passats from service at the local VW dealer and our 04 Boxster S was sitting on the used car lot. Next thing you know, doing a test drive. Back from the test drive, its late on Sat and they suggest we take it home for the night. (I know that game). Bring it back Sunday late morning and negotiate a deal. It came with a carfax that was 3 pages of service at the local Porsche dealer with all maintenance done, oils changes every 5k, etc. I felt pretty good about the care without doing a PPI

Now the funny part is was supposed to be a car for my Wife, on;y I must have frightened he a little in telling her that she shouldn't drive it like her old Celica, downshifting to slow the car down as it wears the clutch faster and brakes are a whole lot less $$$ than a clutch and I can do them as well. Also that it needs to be "driven", not just puttering around below 3000 RPM. Next thing I know she says "I'm not driving it, you drive it", so I was stuck withe the 986S we just bought. What a great husband I am! On top of all that we traded in HER Pas sat that was nicer than mine and now she was driving mine.

Fast forward to Oct 2014 and little did I know that she had been looking at used 996's and found one she really liked, a 2004 996 Targa tip black on black in near perfect condition. next thing I know we have 2 Porsche in the driveway.

Fricking heroin these cars are....

November 2004, Guards red 1999. Earlier that year I had bought a 2004 Dodge dakota 2WD and I hated it. A few years earlier I had a Miata and loved it. I started looking around at the Z3, miatas, etc and thought I'd look at the Boxster for kicks. I couldn't believe it was in my price range. I thought the insurance would be the deal killer, but it turned out to be less than on the truck! (Ins. person said I'd do a lot more damage to someone else with the big truck vs. the little Porsche).

Ordered mine in 08/2002. Was delivered in 01/2003.

Stupidly my hair turns more and more to the exterior color of the car. But if the light is right i look as good as the car.

15 years ago I told the sales manager to "shut up and take my money" (I never regretted my decision)
"A testdrive? Meh, don't need to ...where do I sign? I gonna testdrive the Boxster when I pick it up"
November 2000, I picked her up in Zuffenhausen.
I got instructed by Frau Farbissina
:troll:
...she scared the heck outta me...no fooling around...and THEN I was really nervous trying not to hit the 911s and Boxsters on the shiny, slippery ramp...lol
I will never forget the "testdrive" back home...on the Autobahn

one year ago I was looking for a Jeep CJ 5 fun car. looked at several but didn't like any of the deals. Driving with my wife we saw a boxter on the road for sale. Asked her if she would like one of these instead of a jeep. (we both had had sports cars before but never a Porsche. We tested it but it was beat. Two days later she found a 2001 manual s garage princesss with 30k miles. Drove it and bought it the nest day. Wouldn't take an old Jeep on a 100 mile day trip that's for sure. By the way, she is still a garage princess only going out in fair weather.
