That's a nice looking car, imo. I had a 10th anniversary NB, and loved it. Nowhere near as good as the 986, but fun!

I had a burgundy NB Miata. It changed my life and spoiled me for run-of-the-mill cars. It was the nicest car I had ever owned. It taught me how a car could drive. It got me ready for my Boxster, even though I had no idea that I would ever own one.

No, I would never purposefully go back to a Miata/MX-5.

Pros:

- 0-60 in 5.8 seconds (can vary depending on the magazine that test drove it)
- I like the exterior (looks more aggressive and sleek)
- Light (~2,300 lbs)
- Warranty (always nice to have)
- Cheap to maintain
- No-hassle soft-top (one pull with arm gets it up and down while driving - less parts to break down compared to a powered top like the Boxster's)

Cons:

It's not a Porsche
Probably less roomy than the Boxster
Only one trunk
No glovebox
4 cylinder, less hp/torque but weighs less
No. I really miss my 80's Honda Civic CRX si though. I received many compliments on that car and it stayed in the family for 189k miles.

are there any 986's still selling for $30K? That was the going rate for a base 2000 986 eleven years ago. Not sure I would spend 30K on any m97 car either. I'd hold out until the 9A1 cars (2009+) came down a bit more. $30K on a used car (that has been mass produced) really warrants at least the latest engine regime and developments. Shouldn't take long for those 2009+ cars to come down with what seems like an epic glut of Porsches of every flavor.

As for the Miata, if we're talking similar vintage (late 90's to mid 2000's), the Miata is hands down the best value going for someone who intends to really put the car through its paces. A Corvette (once the seats are removed and burned to ashes) is more capable but with that much power you either really have to know what you're doing, or exercise considerable restraint. With the Miata you are using nearly all of the power all of the time, if you screw up you're not in the wooden box. And the car will not quit no matter how bad you beat on it, summer or winter, rain or shine.
I lament Mazda not having taken the mid engine car more seriously. A copy cat Boxster/Coxster would have been a very popular alternative to our segment.

Absolutely no way would I swap, and the same thing with the 86. Why would I want to spend more money on a worse car, and also get hit with new car depreciation?

When I got my Boxster, my friends and friends of friends were queuing up to go for a spin in it. Another friend got a new 86, and that has not had anything like the same effect. It's still just a Toyota. Sports cars are about driving fun, and the feel good factor. The Boxster wins hands down on both counts. The only downside is having to be careful to find a good one, whereas a new 86 or Miata should be guaranteed trouble free motoring.

Say cheeze!!!!!

Won't Masda ever get tired of smiling? This car looks like some fat Japanese guy smiling at you. I expect it to jump up on it's rear wheels and do some animated thing like a cartoon character. I couldn't consider it until then get some reasonable styling.

I think their cup car looks as good as any pre-981 Boxster/Coxster.

Why do you even own a Boxster? You constantly call them junk and now your trashing the style. Sell it, buy a Miata and go to the Miata forums and tell them how the car is junk and looks ugly. It's getting really worn out around here.

Can't be an easy fit with the Boxster either! Do you have the GT3 Console Delete kit? I'm an inch shorter and installed it yrs ago. Don't think I would have kept the car without it.

Ha, I'm also 6'4" and fit fine in the Boxster. The GT3 delete kit definitely helped improve things. The old Miata was a no go! We'll see about the new one. I believe the seat is setup that the further back you move it the lower it goes.

Before buying a Boxster I tried every affordable sports car. The Z4 kinda fit but overall didn't impress me. Older 911s were wonderful for leg room, but I didn't want a roof. The newer gens of the 911 are half console. No room for the leggy driver. In fact, almost every car made has too much console and places the driver in a slot!

Sure...

I would immediately trade-in my Boxster for the new Miata, if they put 50.000$ cash on Top...

...to get the 981 Spyder (they only newer Boxster I would accept looks-wise)

forgive me for being objective and having a sense of humor.
And I would defy you to find a single post since 2004 where I said the Boxster was "junk". You will however find numerous posts where I say that the Boxster has always set the bar in this category. And I've already owned a Miata, if I thought it the better car, I'd have gone back to it. You've also missed the many threads praising the Miata -- a car commonly owned by Porsche drivers on this many other forums.

p.s.
I find it curious that you have no problem expressing your unfavorable views about the styling of someone else's car but once it's directed at your car it becomes an issue. You should be able to take what you dish out.

You're always moaning how much you had to spend on your car for repairs. Telling people don't buy one unless you can put away some ridiculous amount of money each year because the car is going to break, you're calling it junk.

As for the picture. I didn't go out of my way to find a picture of the Miata so I could say it looked like a fish out of water, which it does, then you go and find a picture of a fish that looks nothing like a Boxster and say the Boxster is "chernobyl" fish.

Sell your Boxster, please.
