Anyone used the emergency hood release?

Hi
My 2007 Boxster is stuck in the garage, battery not connected and hood /trunk locked, did not respond to fuse box jump.

SO i am trying to use the emergency hood release. See the pic.

I took 4 screws out of the plastic wheel-well liner, but I could not remove it, it seems to be attached in areas I cannot access, but i have been able to pull it open to a degree.
And I think i can see the emergency hood release! It looks like a silver wire!
I bent a metal clothes hanger into a useful shape and and managed to snag the wire solidly.
I pulled on the wire but nothing happens!

If anyone has done this before, do you need to pull in a certain direction? How hard do you need to pull to release the hood? Thanks
