Got a little sideways in the rain due to over acceleration but that's about it. Not one to bark the tires as my luck would dictate something very well might come off.

I "chirp" my rear tires on occasion. I also have the habit of getting the rear end side ways when safe to do so.

I did it once, immediately followed by my driver side axle exploding.

The clutch is too small and too expensive.

Seriously? Mines a Tip and she turn the tires from a stop. I think Porsche thought we were going to be pulling tree stumps with the 1st in this car, like putting a truck in granny gear.

I autocross it pretty often - Chirp, spin, slide, lock up, squeal...all very regular occurrences. You will be amazed how far you can push the envelope in these things. If you don't go over the edge once in a while, you don't know where the edge is! :-)

Take your traction control off and go have some fun! (in a safe way, obeying all local and state laws, of course).

Well, I obviously haven't been trying hard enough!

Once, not really on purpose. I pulled out of a parking lot with a blind turn just before in the lane I was turning into when a truck barreled up on me around the turn. I had to get the hell out of the way FAST, with no shoulder or anything. Chirped on the 1-2 shift.

I had it at the autocross on R-comps as soon as I purchased it. It was clear to me then that the car had more than enough power and top spinning ability to put me up a tree or facing the wrong way in the opposite lane. You need to drive with both hands and feets and most of your brain.

Wait... you mean your tip goes back to... 1st? Huh.

When I had tip in my 2006 987, once I hit 2nd, I stayed in second until I turned the car off and started it again. Do you downshift at a stop just to get back to 1st? Granted, I am no Chet Haze, so "barking" tires and "pulling tree stumps" is lost on me, but I do know that all the tips I've seen from 2006 and earlier didn't go back to 1st, after having reached 2nd. Even from the stop. Dawg. Is it a 987 thang, yo?

Why yes is goes into 1st gear after going into 2nd, even on the roll, no stop needed.

Huh. So why did Porsche do that with the 987 tip? I never understood that. I mean 1st just seemed so useless, if you were going to start in 2nd, after having reached 2nd.

[edit] Aha! I was driving in "auto mode" most of the time - that seems to explain why I started in 2nd. And, to get back to topic, after google searching - no, I haven't squealed, barked, etc. the tires in most of the cars I've owned. Just not my thing.

Correct, in auto mode the car starts out in 2nd gear. To get into 1st gear you need to use manual mode.

But, in 1st (which I didn't spend more than 3-6 seconds in so I can't compare), in manual mode - did/do you appreciate any noticeable difference in performance? On the low end of the RPM spectrum, I don't know that I appreciated any difference - as compared to downshifting and exerting more control in the other gears. In autocrossing, etc., is there a performance difference in 1st? Though I may be... sarcastic in most of my posting, I'm attempting a serious question, so please do answer. My current 981 *pdk* goes back to 1st - even in auto mode. Pretty sure my 997.2S, also pdk, went back to 1st in auto mode.

With the Tiptronic, yes 1st is much faster off the line. The bad thing is Porsche geared 1st so low when you hit 2nd gear the RPM drop is not optimal in my eyes, hence me saying Porsche must have thought we are pulling out tree stumps with 1st gear.

PDK I have no idea, I've never driven one. All I know is it's much better then the Tiptronic.

The 986, even in auto, will take first. It starts in second, but if you quickly let off the brake and stab the throttle, the car will downshift to first before sending you off the line. It is much more visceral than your usual 2nd gear pull away, so much so that once it sheered two bolts on my cv joint!
Rolling with a manual 6 speed now, first seems longer in the 6 speed.
