Sell 944 for a Boxster?

So I've got quite the quandary on my hands here guys.

Back in 2013 I purchased a 2.5 Boxster, had all the critical service updates, extremely well sorted, and I absolutely loved the car. Still have the hardtop sitting on a rolling stand. Long story short, I had to sell it after only 8 months to fund a 964 that fell into my lap.

Now I've been given the chance to buy the Boxster back. The only problem is I'd have to sell my '86 944 that I've owned for 12 years (and a nice 5spd '99 A4). Minus a leaky PS rack and a few small issues it's in excellent condition and a real head turner with black fuchs!

There's little doubt the 986 is hands down the better car, and while I still enjoy the 944, it's a bit "been there, done that" for me. The biggest obstacle is the nostalgia/memories I hold with the car, and I'm not sure how I'll feel once it's gone.

Would appreciate some input!

If you are attached to it for sentimental reasons you will regret it. If it is time to move on go ahead and buy the boxster back . I never get too attached to vehicles because I like to change them up a lot. I have never been in the situation where I was handed down a vehicle or had any attachment so I might be biased. To me they are just a vehicle that I enjoy driving while I have them. I like too many cars for different reasons so I move on.

I'd say go with your gut feeling; do whatever you want. Neither is a bad choice and definitely a first world problem (which Porsche do I keep?)!!

Got any pic's of the 944 for us to take a look at? We're Porsche fans despite our preference for the 986.

Good 944's are harder to come by than Boxsters so keep it. Then again you said you already dumped a lot , er you did some critical maintenance on the Boxster so you MUST find a way to buy it (without letting go of the 944 which would take a long time anyway).

Keep the 944. The boxsters a better car. But keep the 944. You may be able to own both someday with how cheap boxsters are getting, at least a 2.5 and 944s are just getting rarer and rarer.

If the 944 is in really good condition and runs strong, I would figure out another way to get the Boxster.

Just my opinion, I would be looking to buy a Boxster S.

I bought a 79 Mustang Pace Car in Oct 79 (it was used - 3mo old w/ 3K mi). I owned it for 34+ yrs. However, the last 5 yrs I hardly drove it and in fact kept it at my mom's. So last summer I sold it to a nice guy in Dallas. That Mustang is the longest relationship I've had in my life. I haven't missed it since I have 2 Porsches taking up my time.

I ran it thru Mecum in KC, but it went to the Bid Goes On.

Currently owning several Boxsters and a '90 944S2 Cab, I'd say keep the 944 if it's in top notch condition.

I've had my 944 for 20 years. I can find a ton of 986 cars in outstanding condition without having to look hard, and they'll be available for a long time. A nice condition 944 not so easy...

Just my 2 cents worth...

Thanks for the replies so far. Here I expected an overwhelming bias toward the boxster!

As requested, here's the 944 in question:

Lord have mercy, that car looks beautiful. No way I would sell it unless someone would give me an offer I couldn't refuse.

What do you think the 944 is worth?

Get the Boxster !!! I sold a 1998 Final Edition Ducati 900 Supersport motorcycle to get a 2007 Honda CBR1000RR. I never think about the Ducati anymore (except to write this post )....

Thank you.

Honestly not sure. It's a weird market, 80's poster cars are hot, and dealers are testing the waters with pristine 944 turbos in the 20-40k range. Historically the nicest 944 NA's have brought 10-12k tops for an S or S2.

I'm totally with BigJake On this one. Do what you can to keep the 944. I've seen prices almost double for nice 944's and more than double for nice turbo's. 986 prices are just falling fast Nd so many to choose from.

As a former 944S2 owner I'd say keep the 944. Clean ones are hard to find. Boxsters are easy to find. I personally would love a 89 944 Turbo.

I'm a bit of a sentimentalist, but that's also a really clean beautiful example! Wow! I'd be tempted to keep it. I remember a time when used 944s were a dime a dozen, (and most of them well worn at that), but no longer. They are fast becoming more rare and collectible.

I'll step out on a limb here - I do not believe a base 2.5l Boxster is a better car than this 944. These older Porsches are built better for one thing (I have owned older Porsches and newer, big difference imho). Also, that 944 looks to be in pristine condition. The only way I would move out of that and into a 986 is if the Boxster is an S, with the LN or comparable upgrade already done.

Sell the Audi. If you're itching for a 986, figure out how to do it without losing either of the other two Porsches

There is no way I would sell that 944 if there is ANY question in your mind. Pristine 944's are getting more rare by the minute. I think you will regret it. Just by the fact that you are asking tells me you really don't want to part with it. Find a way to keep it and get the Boxster. Good luck with your decision.

Without a doubt keep that 944! Unless you want to sell it... To me

In all seriousness the 944 is appreciating and it's becoming increasingly harder to find one in that nice of condition. You will make up $ you sank in the boxster in upgrades from the 944 appreciating. Wait about 5 years, save up to get an S. I would love to have a 944 like that in my garage to use as a weekend cruiser.
