So the other day I lowered the top and POP!

So the other day I lowered the top and POP! I figured after 260k or so something must have broke. Well it was not the ball end links...

Apparently I broke the mounting studs to the passenger transmission.

Maybe I should tear the trans out to see if the gear is junk...

I had a neighbor's car do this on 4 of the 6 studs. I had to put washers around the studs, then weld the washers to the body. Have you taken yours apart yet to make sure it didn't happen to yours too?

Either that or drill and tap the spacers so they can take bolts

I have to say your neighbor's really moves around. Did it even go up and down anymore?

I should but I have to see what I have. I'll be gone for next few days though.

My neighbor bought the car because it was a "good deal". I told him he needed to cut his losses and run away. I had to replace almost every part of the convertible top. He had tried to work on it and made things worse. The sensors were missing and because of that, the transmissions would jump out of gear. One of the control arms was made out of allthread with nuts and bolts holding it to the top frame at one end and welded to the stock control arm lower part that connects to the transmission. It was scary! The plastic window was mostly gone too. How the immobilizer still works after all this time I'll never know.

No problem I have to do some work on some other things this week anyhow. lets see what happens.

I looked online and notice that some of the gear boxes are stamp aluminum and some are cast. What gives?

From what I've seen on my cars, there's two different style of transmissions and studs. One style goes from 97-99 and the other is 00-04. I like the 97-99 style better because it doesn't have that crappy plastic gear inside. The mounting studs are different too. Looking at your stud, it looks like it's for the 00-04 type transmission. The "bolt" part of the stud is thicker on 00-04 vs the 97-99. If you look at our pictures you can see the difference. Every 97-99 boxster I've seen has the thin stud with the cast transmission. Do you have a pic of your trans?

I would crack it open and see what shape the plastic gear is in.

eh got lazy as I have too many cars to work on at the moment. Just used a stack of washers and a bolt to reassemble. I should have used a stud instead but this was what was in the bolt drawer. I also just welded the broken tab back on... Sorry for the out of focus picture.
