transmission repair near Atlanta ?

I need a 6 speed transmission repaired, second gear keeps jumping out. Can anyone recommend a shop in or around Atlanta Georgia ?

I like Franz Blam Racing in Tucker, but that might be a hike for you.

There is a common fix for this that you can find in the DIY section where you can replace a spring loaded detent without removing the gearbox.

If my geography is right Marietta is fairly eastern Georgia. Protech is a Porsche garage in upstate South Carolina with skilled workers and great prices if the distance isn't too far.

Where in Atlanta? As I'm in North Fulton, I use german car repair in Roswell. Good reputation and close to my house. Have you talked to the guys at ********************************************.com? I have not used them, but the have a good reputation as well, plus they're in Marietta. They were great over the phone, but just not convenient to where I live.

Upstate South Carolina is about 1.5-2 hrs away...not really close.

Marietta is about 10 miles or so northwest of Atlanta.

I had the same problem, I ended up pulling the transmission and sent it to Gbox for a rebuild. While I had it out I went ahead and did the IMS retrofit and put a new Sachs Clutch Kit in. Cost for transmission rebuild (2nd gear syncro and some other parts replaced) was ~$3k with shipping both ways, that was a few years ago.

Ouch. 3k. I just picked up an extra trans that I wound up putting in for 600.00. Granted its a 5 speed but it had low miles and I knew the owner. Id source a used one.

Yeah I found it by doing a search but thanks for the link. I'm afraid mine is past just doing the detent upgrade.

Yeah, I still remember the sting lol. Maybe it was $2600 with shipping, not sure anymore and the receipt went with the car when I sold it. I hunted for a used 6 speed tranny for a few months without luck, when I did find them they were in the $2500 range, probably more out there now.

Gbox did do a very good job and Erik was great to deal with.

Really?? A lot of rennlisters say good things, at least about their parts.

Once upon a time Auto Atlanta got in over their heads with an engine.. George called me and asked if I could help, and I told him to send it on up, but just bring the long block.

He sent it alright, strapped on the back of a motorcycle with bungee cords. I'll see if I can find the pic somewhere. While his employee was waiting on us to do the procedure he laid down on the loading dock and went to sleep... Where he was almost crushed!

We finished the job, woke up the bike rider and he strapped it back on the bike and rode off into the sunset.

The S transmission has been repaired by Euro Imports in Suwanee. Jim Kinney is a great guy to work with he knows these transmissions. He has come up with his own in house 2nd gear slider modification that makes it much more robust. Turns out mine had a 2nd gear that was missing a tooth or two which was causing it to jump out of gear. While we were in there replaced 2nd gear synchro along with some other parts. Their number is 770-932-5267 if anyone needs this service done.

$2800.00.......yep a lot of money but buying a used 6 speed was probably going to net me a transmission that would need 2nd gear repaired. As was explained to me these 6 speeds have a inherit weakness in the 2nd gear slide mechanism ( hope I have that right ). It is held on both ends by VERY flimsy bushings. These bushings wear and when they do the 2nd gear engagement is not full. Jim gave me the old parts that were replaced and he pointed out how small the gear engagement teeth are for the slider !!!! They are not very big. So just a little bit of wear on those flimsy bushings and she starts to tear herself apart. Jim line bores the case for lack of a better term and installs much larger bronze bushings and larger seals. He says he's NEVER had one come back and he's done a bunch of 986/996 transmissions. The OEM bushings are really a joke. I'm probably not explaining everything correctly but I got a 15 minute data dump from Jim and that's what I remember. He says the transmission is now bullet proof as long as I use the clutch and change the fluid every 50k or so.

Jim fixed mine too. Jakes motor was too much for it. Jim also rebuilt my 968 6 speed a few years ago. I head the dreaded pinion bearing problem, but he went through the whole thing replacing just the parts that were worn. The difference in the way that car runs is amazing. That was an expensive job but it took a lot of time.
