If you look for a used boxster out here in SF bay area, you'd think they were made out of Gold! They are 20%- 30% HIGHER than KBB, and they stick with it...i don't know if there are just a bunch of suckers out here with more $$ than brains, or what, but they don't negotiate much.

For example, I was looking for an automatic for the wife. Came across a 2006 with 65k miles. Blue book says that a reasonable price from a dealer (not PP, mind you) is $17.5k. This one was a little beat, but in good condition. the sticker was $21k (!), and that was their "true pricing" (which means we don't negotiate). On the last day of January, i called them and they were willing to come down to $20k. Still a good $3k off the mark...

I have more stories, but at the end of the day, i got so frustrated with the dealerships out here that i bought her a BMW 330ci convertible instead. Probably won't have an IMS problem with that one :-)

Been watching the Bay Area Boxster market for a bit. The one thing that strikes me is how long these Boxsters sit on the market. Months. They just don't seem to be in any demand. Now if you have an early 911, they'll beat a path to your door to buy it, in any condition.

selling points on getting my secific car was the glass rear window and the fact the waterpump was already taken care of! my car was 2 hours away so we knew if we took the time to drive and look at it we would likely be buying... definitly helped sell the car.

The Rule To Remember

Perfect Lap said it Perfectly to me about a year ago when I was crying about some other costly repair.....
'there is no such thing as a good deal on a Porsche, because in the end You will pay!" the next question is was it worth it? .... definitly maybe yes

I noticed when shopping for a Porsche, most owners are full of themselves and tend to over price the cars. There are really not a ton of buyers out there. If you really take a look at the cars for sale you will notice that over a period of time it is the same cars for sale! They never sell unless they are priced below everyone else or appear to be a extremely good value

Yes but for driving purposes early 911 vs Boxsters are apple and orange propositions.
air cooled 911's, 964 and 993's may all at some point recoupe their sticker prices (few have, particularly if you consider how expensive they were for their day).
But if you do buy one of these you won't be driving it the way you will drive a Boxster/Cayman or 996/997 Carrera. The air-cooled cars have essentially become garage queens, and for good reason. The endless supply of Boxster/Cayman and '99-'14 Carreras means that you can do whatever you want when you want with these cars. Street or track, rain or shine. If your Boxster/Cayman or 996/997 is stolen and sent to Russia, you can get another one in a day if you don't care about scoring a bargain. It's like Hugh Hefner living at the Playboy Mansion vs. the guy who lives in the remote county where the best looking girl lives three hours away. Finding another beauty to spend all your money isn't so hard with the former. For me it makes driving the workhorse cars more enjoyable.

They should put one of these in the trunk when they hand you the keys.

Like the saying goes, "Let the buyer beware". You cannot get a warranty on a 14 year old car so I just got'em down on price and hope for the best. I have a 99, things to look out for beyond the usual tires, brakes. Water in the brake booster on pre 2000 cars, coolant fans, the 4 spoke steering wheel tends to wear and horn starts honking randomly. I tell everyone who asks, if you are not handy and willing to work on your car yourself you better have a pile of money to pay someone and even when you fix it yourself parts can be expensive and difficult to get. I have taken to scrounging on ebay and craigslist. There are a lot of great people on these forums willing to help, they are a great resource.
