The 981 is the opposite. It's not actually that much bigger than the 986 (though the main body height it much taller, even though the overall height is not), but it looks much, much bigger.
Now that you mention it, probably purely intentional. 986 was the new affordable Porsche & now 981 is moving upmarket as a premium sports-car, more luxurious & comfortable.
