I just bought my (new to me) Boxster and not only was my shift knob trashed, but it seems like a LOT of boxsters have the same issue with wear.
I spent a few minutes yesterday taking mine apart and repainting. Looks literally brand new so I thought I would let everyone know that it is an easy job that makes a huge appearance difference.

After pulling the knob off (thought it was pretty easy to pull off) and then using a plastic trim tool to pry off painted cover and then top shifter trim. NOTE the way the painted cover comes out of the grooves, it is pressure fit and if you are only painting it then the entire shifter does not need to be removed.
I used Satin Nickel spray paint and clear Enamel topcoat. Treated the leather like shoes with black paste and leather conditioner. Shined shifter emblem with dremel.
Looks Brand New.
This is too easy for people to have worn out shifters in their cars.
