Shifter restoration

I just bought my (new to me) Boxster and not only was my shift knob trashed, but it seems like a LOT of boxsters have the same issue with wear.

I spent a few minutes yesterday taking mine apart and repainting. Looks literally brand new so I thought I would let everyone know that it is an easy job that makes a huge appearance difference.

Pic of interior when I purchased:

After pulling the knob off (thought it was pretty easy to pull off) and then using a plastic trim tool to pry off painted cover and then top shifter trim. NOTE the way the painted cover comes out of the grooves, it is pressure fit and if you are only painting it then the entire shifter does not need to be removed.

I used Satin Nickel spray paint and clear Enamel topcoat. Treated the leather like shoes with black paste and leather conditioner. Shined shifter emblem with dremel.

Looks Brand New.

This is too easy for people to have worn out shifters in their cars.

Nice! I just went and pulled one of my spare, worn out shift handles apart to get it ready for paint. Thanks for the tip!

Also - as another Okie Boxster owner, welcome to the club. Two tips for you that you may already know... Dumonts in OKC near Bricktown for honest, quality repair work and Okla Foreign on I-35 in Moore for Porsche used parts. Both Mike Dumont and Gary Rabe are very knowledgable, fair guys to work with.

Cheers!

Nice job and pics.

I just got sick of the OEM knob and replaced with a solid aluminum ball shifter after trimming the shifting shaft. Much better than OEM, IMHO.
