Saw I was a on the low side of oil and went to add some more in. There was this brown crusty stuff inside the cap and a bit on the filler nozzle. Upon closer inspection, I determined that it was ice. (It's been in the -10s for a couple days here) Not a lot of ice, but it doesn't take too much ice in my oil system to scare the hell out of me. Why is there ice under my oil cap? Perhaps condensation? I just back from from driving from OKC to Chicago and I parked it and haven't touched it in a week. Please say normal condensation. Please say normal condensation.

I see condensation in my oil cap in colder months on my 14 mile commute drive. I wipe it out periodically. When I do longer drives 1+ hours no condensation. In the warmer month I also don't see condensation. Ice would simply be your frozen condensation

In retrospect, I guess if it was coolant, it wouldn't have frozen. Well, not if it was good coolant anyway. Just put a bit of a scare into me. Thanks all.

We've had some pretty cold temps lately (single digit lows) and last Saturday I had the same experience as CoBeerToad. I had a hard time getting the cap off because it was frozen to the filler. I racked it up to condensation but was surprised at the amount of moisture. The filler neck wall had a thin layer of ice as well. Car is driven daily around 75 miles/day. 20K miles on the odometer.

It is called "winter" guys, happens this time every year, and normal condensate tends to freeze..............

You need to add rice to your oil to soak up all that unwanted water.
