Black stripes

I need opinions. Be gentle.

I have the Arctic Silver Box with the Silver top. Was going to have wheels powder coated gun metal grey and have a dark grey PORSCHE stripe down each side. I did black powder coat and black stripes on my last box but it was the seal grey color so darker.

After seeing some pics online of the anniversary edition, I am not sure I like the gun metal grey now for this light colored box. I also was not a fan up front of Black on the silver box. Not sure why...still cant put my finger on it, but after looking at more pics, believe that is they way I should go.

More than that, I realllly dont like just the plain boxster - I like them jazzed up a little more. So stripes and wheels. (specifically the older models).

I am going to take the spoiler off the back (aftermarket) and do the 981 porsche and boxster lettering on the back. But IF ANYONE KNOWS WHERE I CAN GET THAT LETTERING IN BLACK, let me know. Suncoast has Black letters, but not sure if they are the same size as the chrome? I Guess I could call them.

My question is this:

Gun metal grey wheels and dark grey stripes OR

Black wheels and Black Stripe ALSO

Leave spoiler on or take off AND Use Black or chrome 981 letters???

I want the car to look like Porsche might have shipped it that way. Maybe that is why I am not 100% on the silver and black yet. Doesnt seem like that is something Porsche would have done. Also migh be getting thrown off because of the light top (maybe if it was black it would make me think different?

As far as striping the arctic silver box, I've done an offset stripe and chrome badge on the back. The offset stripe is a "ghost" color, so it only comes up in certain lighting and can actually change from a dark gray to a light silver depending on your viewing angle. I'll try taking better shots, but this is what I have for now.




Comparing the two photos, you can kind of see what I mean by the different colors it gives off. It looks pretty OEM in my opinion and is more classy than flashy.

I think the side stripe ties in nicely with white and some of the monochromatic colors.

Did you do the stripes then the lettering? I just love that look...

I would vote Gunmetal gray wheels instead of black.

I love the striping on Shehadehd's Boxster as well. I assume this was painted on with a nearly full respray, and not some sort of decal stripe. Am I correct?

To the original post: I too have an Arctic Silver Boxster, and I have toyed with the idea of adding an accent color. I saw a 996 GT3 in Arctic Silver with Bright Green lettering and accents. Orange could work too. Either option is VERY flashy. If you want a more subdue look a ghost stripe, gunmetal grey stripe, or some such might be better.

I have a black cloth top so I'd probably go with black accents. Maybe some red too since I have the Boxster Red interior. It is hard to say since I haven't done any of this yet. It is all in my mind.

You might also find some inspiration from the Porsche Design 2 987 Boxster.



Perhaps executed in reverse with a white stripe. Play around with photoshop for a while.

I went with two larger grey stripes in vinyl so that I could see if I liked the look. Plan on having them painted on with some modifications.

The other caviott is finding a set of wheel caps in gunmetal that aren't 534,545 dollars.

So this is actually a vinyl stripe. I was looking for a way to give some extra dimension to the car, but in a subtle way. I found this etched vinyl that gives the car a ghosting stripe. The vinyl is clear with scattered frost hazing and so whatever color you put it on gets an "etched" look that varies from a matte version of the color to a high gloss, depending on the lighting angle. I tried taking a couple extra pictures to show you what I mean.

Very interesting. I had assumed the 'ghost stripe' was only possible with a respray. Great to know one can achieve this look without spoiling the original factory paint.

I bought the stripes off e-bay. They are 8 inch stripes and were for a Chevy Cobalt.

You need to contact the seller to find out what colors he is offering.

I just wanted to see what they looked like on the car (for a year) and then I will have then painted on. I like the back but the front I would follow the hood gap closer. I plan in painting the stripes on in a gun metal with a little sparkle to match the Arctic Silver's sparkle.

I would look at having them done in 3m 1080 film. It is a wrap film and is what they use to do the complete color change wraps on cars. It comes in about 30+ colors I think now and several are different shades (matte, gloss, satin) of gray, anthracite, aluminum, and silver. I installed some on my dads truck a while back and it goes on super easy compared to regular vinyl because it has air release channels. I work with this stuff for a living so I might have a little more experience than most but it is still probably something a DIY person could do with just a little patience. You can kind of curve it as needed as well where regular vinyl is not as forgiving. I purchased it off of ebay and you could probably take it to any sign shop and have them cut whatever text or stripes you wanted out of it for not too much money. Best thing is that it will probably come off a lot easier when you want to take it off instead of breaking into a million pieces like standard vinyl often does. I put black vinyl "boxster" script side stripes on my car about a year ago in standard vinyl and would have done them in the 1080 material if I had known about it at the time.

I'm still looking for that picture somebody posted on this site a while ago and then they deleted it. It was a "ghost" effect of 986 on a trunk lid. I think I know a guy that could do that for me, but I can't remember exactly what it looked like and I'm far from an artist.

But I love those ghost stripes too. Decisions, decisions.

I put the stripes on my 986 myself. I had the kit which is a waste. I learned that all you have to do is put a little dish soap in a spray bottle of water and really soak the surface where you intend to put the vinyl strips. To get the stripe with a correct gap between the two stripes I put down 1 inch wide blue tape down the center of the car. When you have it in the right place you squeegee the water out and stripe is stuck.

It turned out to be real easy once I figured it out. You don't need much dish soap and you can't overdue how much of the solution you put on the car.
