Timco, what do you know about geothermal heating and cooling? I live in a city in Australia with a yearly mean temperature of 66F (I'm imperialising the temperature from Celsius ;)) and it is not uncommon in summer to have a week to 10 days straight of daily highs between 100F and 115F. No one here uses that type of system for cooling or heating, there are 2.5 million people in our city and our state has a GDP per capita of close to USD100k per annum so plenty of people can afford to install such a system. I have thought about bringing this technology here many times but am unsure where to start. I suspect that a modular system is necessary, if such a thing even exists. If you or anyone else is keen to explore this further PM me. |
Actually Daniel, an engineer from the office next to us has been out to Kalgoorlie a couple of times in the last year on some big geothermal project he's working on, and I'm pretty sure he said he goes through Perth to get there. He's a good guy, very knowledgeable and I'm sure he'd be happy to share some information with you, maybe hook up next time he is there. Pm me if you would like his contact info.

geothermal is a great source of energy but capital costs to put it in place are high and it typically doesn't survive a 20-year payback analysis. the key to success is to tie it to another project to share capital costs. ie., parking garage? throw some ground source loops in the excavation prior to backfill. also, look to your city/municipality that already have un-purposed infrastructure in place - there's lots of latent heat that could be utilised in that water/waste water that they pump around.
