Geez, I missed my calling, and doing that as a hobby gets you on a do not fly list now. Interesting story to me at least: My dad was a WWII German POW at a POW prison outside Fort Worth Texas (Mineral Springs) from 1942-45. At the POW camp they gave the prisoners reading material, which were books issued to American soldiers as well. Skip forward 30 years and I have this book about rockets and missles in my hands as a 15 year old, complete with formulations for various propellants and explosive mixtures. When knowledge met with opportunity (Chemistry Class) I found myself doing extra credit work, without the teachers knowledge, as my friend and I made a batch of black powder and tested it in the fumes hood. All went well and the black powder worked brilliantly but unfortunately a friend of my friend decided he wanted to try as well. However he had the great idea that grinding all of the ingredients together in the mortar/pedstal was a good idea. He found out inadvertently how to make a mortar as eventually did enough grinding to get ignition on the desk right in front of the teacher. Burned his hand pretty severely unfortunately but fortunately he did not rat us out. I made rockets with my ingredients as the FLQ in Canada had caused a ban of the Estee's rocket engines in the 70's I still have that Book. |

Just found this while searching for something else, so here's a bump for the new people like myself.
Sr Network Engineer for an internet service provider. About to take my Boxster on a road trip to San Jose for a conference for the industry, got plenty of twisty scenic routes planned along the way! |
Recently retired, and wondering how on earth I found time to work. Was a manager at a chemical / consumers goods plant.

You guys all sound way more interesting than me. :) I'm just a retired Navy (20 years) computer tech, now working as a programmer/analyst for a busy hospital system. Been working in IT-related employment since 1972.
-Dave Side note: I see a lot of replies in this thread are from folks in computer-related jobs. I wonder if that's the reason we own Boxsters? :) |

What is your job?
Me? It's a Boxster! In Porsche terms, it's an inexpensive vehicle. I own/operate a small local computer sales/service business. My daily driver cost a ton more than the Boxster.
2001 Boxster S, 3.2L 6speed manual, CDR220 head, 18" alloy wheels, full leather, etc. Cost, $8,000 new cost, $54,000 dollars. Worth? My daily driver, cost, $34,000. Value, $7,000. |
Could be. Seems nerds love classic sports cars too:) Although, have to say, I wanted a Porsche since the early 1970's. Could not afford one, today I can.

My position is 50/50 IT and accounting, for Toyota Financial Services. No, my other car isn't a Prius... yet.

I've been running Mac/Apple systems for the last 20+ years at a large university. I've got about 800 Mac user systems I direct management of in an very diverse environment. Users are doing things from simple Word files, language research, video and game design, and 3d rendering and printing. Then you have to keep them from turning their systems into spam cannons or exploit bases. I probably should have been an enginenerd cause I spend way too much time building stuff and modyfying cars. But that's fun work not work.

Since the "What's the story behind your forum name?" thread got bumped, I figure it's time to bring this one to the top again.
For me, things are pretty much the same as in post #175. |
