I saw on tv...

that the crooks are ordering $5 scanners online that will unlock a door of a car that uses a remote key entry. Ironically enough my base 2001 Boxster which was originally a lotto car had few options and had no remote key entry. So I am protected against this kind of entry.

In our neighborhood there are enough breakins of cars that are parked outside as it is. If you have a garage use it to put your car in. Make sure your alarm works. Just passing this on......

Did it say anything about being able to bypass the immobilizer? Even if you could unlock the car, it would be difficult to start without the chipped key.

Rick the subject matter on tv was just the fact that somebody could access the inside of the car. It did not go on to say whether the car was going to be stolen or if the contents were going to be stolen.

I don't know about Canada but down here a determined theif can get into any car, cost of any necessary theft equipment is not a deterent if your car is deemed valueable enough in the heavily discounted black market to risk a felony prison sentence.

Joy-riding here is treated the same as GT so that's pretty much a no-go once a criminal hits 18 and certainly a no-go in 3 strikes states.

Why would you have 500 bucks worth of junk taking up space in the garage while you park your car outside? I know some garages are small and it only starts out as "temporary", but something to think about.

Thanks for the warning.

Cars live in garages. Stuff or Junk lives in basements or storage units. Give your Porsche a home and a roof! Anyone desperate enough to buy this has cash. Most will cut the top or break glass. That's free!

Amen.

This is one thing I try to tell to people but they never understand. Strange to see people park their new S class outside in the elements while the contents in their normal garage may be worth only a few grand.

LOL... people are lazy. Taking junk out of the garage means they have to do the work of selling stuff, giving it away or storing somewhere else. Meanwhile their car's paint is getting etched by bird bombs.

If you park your car outside in an uncovered lot an outdoor car cover is a good idea. The OEM Porsche cover (made by CoverKing) comes with a locking cable.
The only downside is that you really need to at least do a waterless wash before putting the cover on. Never put a car cover over a dirty car.

Yup. You really dont have to worry about our cars getting easily stolen with a cheap tool, theres still a heavy lock cylinder that has to be destroyed...

Who does? Mercedes guys and others with electronic keys ( just a plastic insert to start the car ). All you need is a $100 lock smith tool from china, you plug it into the OBD2 port, insert a blank key remote into the ignition, and 1 minute later, hasta la vista!

How are these scumbag online stores allowed to sell these $5 scanners? Is it hard to locate the suppliers? Should be shut down.

It is amazing how our neighbors repeatedly park their cars in front of their house and over and over get their cars broken into. In the meantime the double garage is still full of stuff(junk?). Some people never learn.

It is reassuring that our Boxsters are hard to steal. Thanks for that!

I run red teams for a living...this is media hype. It can be done, but you can't buy a box for $5 ready for use. To answer your question, can you use a remote with an old turn knob TV that doesn't work with a remote? No, of course not. So, people aren't going to be able to unlock your door if you don't have remote entry installed.
