Oily Question ...
Having been an Audi owner for the last 20 years and now an 986 S owner for 13days ... are any of you running 5w40 Castrol Syntec Edge Full Synthetic? Or do I need to fire sale on the TT forum?
My indie shop says "yes" ...perfectly fine to run Castrol ... while others say "no" 0w40 Mobil or 5w40 Motul!
I am in the Pacific Northwest. Incidentally I see Wallmart in Washington State has 0w40 Mobil Full Synthetic for $25 5qt!!
look forward to your oils of preference ...
cheers,
Brian

I'm running that same oil, 5W40 Castrol with Syntec or whatever it is called now, but I am in FL so I'm not sure what your temp range is there. If 5W40 fits your temp requirements I would say go for it

I'm also using it. Switched from Mobil 0W-40 based on the recommendation of a well-respected contributor to the forum.
Having said that, you'll find close to as many opinions on oil out there as there are Boxsters...
PS You're from White Rock and you say you're from the pacific northwest?? Come on, if you're in Canada that's the pacific SOUTHwest.

Around here I can only find Mobil 1 0w40 or castrol 5w40. I use either one depend on price. I change mine out every 5k miles.
For oil filter get Wix brand. I've stocked about 10 filters at once, hengst, wix, and k&n. the construction of Hengst and k&n is inferior to Wix. Unfortunately I still have 3 Hengst filter I have to use.

That's what I use, but get the European blend. That is the one designed for Porsche. Don't ask me if there is anything special about it though, I only use it because it is exactly the same oil as our local Porsche dealer uses. He just buys it in larger capacities.

I also have been using Castrol Edge SPT 5W40 fully synthetic and, interestingly, on a recent visit to the Porsche dealership in London, Ontario discovered that they are now using the same in lieu of Mobil1.

I want to say "Search is your friend"...but I won't. (Even though it is!)
I've been using the synthetic Castrol 10W40 for the last several oil changes, and have been good with it. Chose it over the 5W40 based on the recommendation of one of the forum members here, a guy who has a shop in PA that apparently does a fair amount of Porsche work. He's done used oil analysis on these and other oils and said he'd gotten more favorable readings from the 10W40 over the 5W40.

Yep, here we go again... another "what oil should I use" thread from another noob that can't be bothered to use the search function to find out that his exact question has already been asked and answered ten thousand fkn times in this forum. I thought the plan was just to ignore these people.

Ya but I'm hard to ignore Mark T! not like a pegger to ignore a westcoaster!
I did the search first and do get your point ... but each time is is brought up you also get an updated version of the" fluid topic " of current oil of choice.
I just found out from Ontario Brad that his Porsche dealer has made the switch to Castrol!! and Frodo with his info on 10 40!
I do understand the veterans have done the" tire and oil " question to death... but i do appreciate a fresh discussion.
I appreciate all that responded.
Cheers.

I hate to change anything - Mobil 1 Synthetic 0w40 done by me and previous owner.
My IMS says it likes consistency.....so far so good. Hengst oil filters. IMS Guardian is on guard for me!

We seriously need to consider creating a "what kind of oil does my Boxster use/need" subforum.
And after that a "what is the IMS" subforum. Next would be "I only have $11K in mostly borrowed money and found a '98 base, can I afford to buy and maintain a Boxster?".
anyone else have any other good ones?
p.s.
There are 34, err...now 35, threads discussing Castrol Edge. Including one where Excellence Magazine has a well known Porsche engine expert giving his opinion.

Another one. My wife says she won't love me anymore if I buy a Boxster.

^ This thread should always be on the first page. At least it is entertaining even if repetitious.

Yep, and he said he did a search, and provided valid reasons for asking the question, so I'm good.
I've been using Castrol Syntech (now Edge) 5w40 for several years now and I'm happy with it. Much less start-up clatter than I had with Mobil1 0w40, which I only used for the first year.
Also, Can-Ti has the Castrol Edge on sale from time to time, but I never see Mobil1 on sale. It's actually on sale this week, $29.99 for a 5 litre jug.

my post title was done somewhat tongue and cheek
Remember as a noobie you can only contribute so much ... and I wanted to reach-out and make some new 986 contacts.
hopefully I have succeeded.
