This catch by the filter does bring up another point for all boxster owners.
The stock filter in the 986 has a "Bypass" that allows some oil through without going past the filter element.

I wonder if we should all be installing the Spin-on-filter adapter to have ALL the oil go through the filter to prevent all the bad stuff from passing through the oil channels that feed the bearings and other parts directly and potentially even clogging and restricting the oil feeds.

Makes me want to order one immediately.
Spin On Oil Filter Adapter for Porsche 911, Boxster, Cayenne S/Turbo, and Cayman models
I wonder if Jake can comment on the adapter and whether its a good idea or if there are any issues with doing that?

And I say you are full of sh**.
OP I think you should not worry, keep the oil changed every 3k, and drive the piss out of it. It could be a VERY long time until the engine gives out, IF ever.

I'm not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV, but if I drove that car for a few hundred miles with no problems I'd change the oil again to check the filter and make sure I had flushed as much gunk out as possible. Also, I'd use a magnetic drain plug.

Seeing as the latest responses indicate that some think I'm still driving my car around, I'm just going to quote myself to fill you guys in.

Also, I realize that reading every 4 pages in this thread is too much to ask before posting advises on what to do, I literally just a few post back wallpapered the thread with pictures of the oilfilter after I cut it open.

Spelling correction or not, your paralympics comment is in incredibly poor taste.

He he.. no. I called the seller and just had a normal chat about what had happened. He was, obviously very sorry, and pointed out the PPI (which does not hade a checked point for "oil filter OK / NOT OK")
I did point out that he safely could have done an oilchange within the last 27 months (last time was may 2011, and then I did one last friday - 27 months in between). He agreed..

Had he done an earlier oilchange, he might have noticed the metal particles in the oilfilter alot sooner and in that wa prevented a lot of damage.

The Boxster is being flatbedded in two hours to SSP 1 hour away. I have been promised a diagnostic on the engine before friday afternoon.

First off, I hope your situation is resolved quickly with minimum pain to your bank account.
Calling previous owner (after 27 months) to ask them why they hadn't changed the oil more often? Really? What difference does it make now?

It's not the PO's fault. It's not your fault. Unfortunately, it is your car.

Again, best of luck going forward.
