My BMW experiences:

Z4M- Hot tamale. Tail happy.
M3- Fast, balanced and well sorted.
335- Icky, did not like.
325i- Well sorted fun car.
2002- Very tossable fun car.

Agreed.

I thought however the 335i was an excellent car, and I for one loved the engine - very responsive, minimal turbo lag, and easy to get power out of. It was totally let down by its mushy suspension (necessary because it rode on rock-hard runflats), and the mind boggling lack of a limited slip.

The M3 in comparison is like you said, well sorted. It has very good grip at the front stock, a very progressive power delivery with a huge powerband and very flat torque curve, plus a limited slip. Because of this, it is very easy to drive fast and well, and very forgiving. Well, up to a point anyway. In general, it's a big friendly beast.

Unfortunately, BMW seems to be going the wrong way with the new models... they're all bigger, softer, with less feel and even performance than the models they are replacing.

986_inquiry,

You must have had possession of the fastest 2.5 and 2.7 on the planet, being that you found your 2.5 to be quicker than a 2.7 and your 2.7 to be quicker than a 335.

I've not driven any base boxsters, but lots of 996s, 993s and my current 986S as well as the BMW 335 (and others).

A 335 will absolutely outrun my 2002 S in a straight line...easily! An M3 (even one of the same year) would absolutely smoke it as would an M roadster.

I love the way the 986's drive, but overly quick they're not. In this day and age a mid 5 sec 0-60 is quick car, but it's far from leading in almost any class whether it be SUV, Sedan, Coupe or Compact.

Great cars, but rockets they are not...
