BMW 335ci not bad, almost as fast as us
ran across a BMW 335ci on the highway the other day that wanted to give the 987 a try. It was pretty quick, but i still had a few car lengths on it by the end. I wanted to go again but he wasn't having it. Not bad for a 300hp turbo BMW, maybe with another 100hp a BMW could keep up with us

I love my Porsche but my 335i will smoke it anytime. The boxster is more fun to drive though.

I will third that one. My 335i x-drive can run away from the Boxster but is not nearly as fun.

You have a special Boxster
The other day I ran against one of the new retro style Mustang GT, (not the Coyote engine one) I ran the Boxster up to 130 and was walking away from him the whole time. I slowed down he pulled along side of me and gave me a thumbs up.

The 335 is a faster car; and it's in a different league if chipped.

I agree the beemers are quick but the BoxS is more fun to drive... BUT - if you see the little M3 badge... don't even try...@ 414HP they will kick the Boxsters butt.

My uncle has 335i with the JB4 upgrade and it is unbelievably fast. The JuiceBox upgrade is $500 and makes the 335's faster than M3's. Not only that it's not detectable by the dealership so no warranty void and it comes with 3 tuning settings.
That alone is one of the reasons I want to own one of the BMW's with the N54 engine. It also has an amazingly flat torque curve.
But 100 HP for $500!!!!

Think those 4.6 V8s are only about 300hp, they're slower than our cars. Most surprising highway race I've won was against a 370hp hemi charger r/t, and that was in the 2.5 986.

It better considering they cost $30,000 more than their identical 3-series sibling... could buy two 3-series for the cost of one M3
That's why I'm not a fan of BMW, some owners spend a few bucks on a badge and suddenly it's a M3. BMWs look too similar

The Mustang GT (at least the new ones) are 420 HP (V8). The standard mustang is a V6 and is 300HP
FWIW

No, that is legit.
The 335 is very tune-able. They can get 400 hp and 400+ lb-ft of torque with a very flat torque curve. That said, I sold my 335. It's not fun to drive.

Without wanting to be facetious, you can make the same arguments about any Porsche model range. Boxster base vs. S look basically identical, Carrera base vs. loaded up S model look similar to the casual eye yet sport a $50k price difference between them, etc. The appeal of the M3 is to be invisible to the general population yet rip up in performance with the best sports cars.
Take it from a bimmer head who has owned a chipped 335i with the N54 (twin turbo) and currently has both a Boxster and an M3. The M3 is a very different animal than the 3 series: different drivetrain, suspension, engine, aerodynamics all add up not only to a very different driving experience, but also to a big step up in excitement and performance, on and off the track. The engine is a masterpiece, revs to 8400 RPM and is probably worth $20k of the price difference.
Cost wise, my M3 was $55k out the door with taxes and everything, why don't you put this in the context of the Boxster range for an eye opener. I picked it up in Munich, drove on the Nurburgring, on fabulous Alpine passes and all the way to Southern Spain, 4000km of pure driving bliss.
Drive one and you'll understand...

My BMW experiences:
Z4M- Hot tamale. Tail happy.
M3- Fast, balanced and well sorted.
335- Icky, did not like.
325i- Well sorted fun car.
2002- Very tossable fun car.

It's easy to rebadge just about anything; its easy to put an 'S' behind the word Boxster on the trunk as well and throw some fancy rims on...
The guys that badge soon come to realize they are living far from reality of truly owning the real thing

Agreed.
I thought however the 335i was an excellent car, and I for one loved the engine - very responsive, minimal turbo lag, and easy to get power out of. It was totally let down by its mushy suspension (necessary because it rode on rock-hard runflats), and the mind boggling lack of a limited slip.
The M3 in comparison is like you said, well sorted. It has very good grip at the front stock, a very progressive power delivery with a huge powerband and very flat torque curve, plus a limited slip. Because of this, it is very easy to drive fast and well, and very forgiving. Well, up to a point anyway. In general, it's a big friendly beast.
Unfortunately, BMW seems to be going the wrong way with the new models... they're all bigger, softer, with less feel and even performance than the models they are replacing.
