Is that a Ferrari or Porsche ?

It happened again ! It makes me laugh everytime.

My office was moved over the weekend from our plant to our distribution center. I took the Explorer on Monday and Tuesday but today a had a lunch meeting to go to out in a small town about 20 miles south so I took the Boxster S to work today. Sunny and about 48 degrees. Good excuse to get it out of the garage.

I parked the car across the lot from the double front doors both in the morning and after lunch. When I got back from lunch several of the warehouse guys were in the back office having a debate about Ferrari and Porsche. It was getting loud. Finally they opened the door and with about 5 of them gathered at the door one of them spoke up. "Is your car a Ferrari or Porsche" he asked as they all looked on intently. I had to laugh. Then I told them it was a Porsche Boxster S. One of them shouted out, "See I told you". Then they closed the door and all went back to work.

To me Ferrari cars look quite different. How often do you get asked this question ?

Ha, that's cool. I never had that happen. Once someone did call my Mercedes C280 a Mustang, though. I dunno about that one.

I'm a college student so I get it quite often... sadly not as many people my age are as enthused about cars as I am.

I think they can't tell the difference because the emblems are similar gold with a horse and yellow with a horse is what the untrained eye sees

If that happened in California I think they'd be asked to move out of the state LOL.

I think you'll find it's because it's red.

A silver Box won't get people confused nearly as often.

I've had the "nice Ferrari" thing a couple of time with my red Box. So it goes.

I once had a gas station lady compliment me on my car (didn't guess what type it was) and then ask my brother (who was next in line) if his car (a 996 Cab sitting out front) was "the new Camaro." This was back before the new Camaro was out.

Happened to me, too! Oh well, happy with the Box.

Seems that people think you are filthy rich when driving a car which is cheaper than their Camrys......

I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I had the same question come up at a fuel station. I assumed the guy was just stupid or drunk, but I find that this is much more common that I could've guessed.
Doesn't anybody watch Top Gear? My 5 year old son knows the difference between a Porsche and a Ferrari.

I had it happen too at a small drive-in burger stand (Syl's in Carman). A very nice older lady came up to me and said that she and her husband were wondering if my car was a Porsche or a Ferrari. You see a lot of classic American cars around those parts, but not many exotics. If it was an Edsel she would have recognized it right off.

People always mistake the Dangermobile for being the latest Batmobile. Don't figure ?

this is a ferrari. got an hour on the track in it from the wife for valentines day. Great fun, but more if it had not rained.

anyone who would confuse a new Porsche for any Ferrari is clearly not a car person.

The other thing I've noticed about non-enthusiasts is that they don't distinguish between Porsches. For instance I've gotten dozens of comments on my car when I'm out and about, no one ever refers to it by saying "Nice Boxster". It's always "Nice Porsche" or "say is that your Porsche outside?", "is your Porsche expensive to keep up?", etc. The only people who seem to see it on a model level are other Porsche people, or folks who drive M3's, Corvettes, Mustangs, STI's etc. -- another equally small group.

then there's the flipside, I was in a diner once and a guy asked wich guy left the tailights turn on in their MR2 Spyder?

When asked about mine, I usually say Toyota.

I had a guards red 944 with a tan interior that was in really great shape, One of the middle school kids from down the street stopped me one day and asked if it was a Ferrari or a Porsche. I told him it was a Porsche. He exclaimed " I knew it! my brother is sooo stupid." I asked him how he knew it was Porsche he looked at me like I was the stupid one and said" cause it has a Porsche badge on it not a Ferrari horse"

I also had some high school kids at the gas station one night ask me if my 944 was the new Boxster. I told them no it was the "old model Porsche" way before boxsters. They lost interest and moved on.

I was getting my haircut a few months back and the barber was really slow. I had to send him out to feed my parking meter. He came back, a long while later, and commented on what a nice Ferrari I had. He was confused by the horse on the emblem....
