Mine has a button that only says PSM, which the dealer said never turn off, and the track instructor said to definitely turn off. I understood it to be stability, but you're saying it adjusts the suspension? Wow, how does that actually work?

Ahh, different beast (and thanks for the smileys).

986s did not have PASM -- that came out with 987/997. We (and they, 987s) have Porsche Stability Management (PSM), optional on 986 after 2000 iirc, standard on all 987s. PASM is adjustable suspension, as I said above, and a completely different system, despite the similar acronyms. Well, to be completely forthright, PASM is an acronym (pronounced "pazzum") and PSM is merely an initialism (pronounced pee ess em). But that's an aside and of no consequence.

By the way, both your dealer and your track instructor were right! But until you understand what PSM does, and how it can save your sweet ass if you get into trouble, and exactly WHY you might want to turn it off, it's probably a great idea not to turn it off. It's a very, very good, non-intrusive traction control system.
