IMS bearing!" but then realized that it was just a massive misfire condition. CEL came on and I limped to gas up. The CEL went away after fueling and I went on my way, thinking that Boxsters didn't like running on fumes. About 30 miles later, same thing. So, I pulled off I-70 and sat there. I turned the ignition back on and the check oil level thing took about 10 minutes (?). CEL came right back. Western Kansas isn't a great place to get stuck, so I saw that I was close to an O'Reilly's (better than nothing) and limped off with the hazards flashing. The nice gal pulled the code (P0306 - Engine misfire). Rather than get stuck in Burlington, I chose to drive the rest of the way (also a blizzard approaching). Amazingly, the misfire seems to have gone away, but the CEL is still on.
Any ideas? Logic says something got very, very wet, and then dried off.

Fingers crossed. And you really shouldn't have to worry about the IMS on 06 and up. So far, extremely few issues on that bigger, sturdier bearing. Hopefully that continues as the kilometres roll.

Yes, that is another hope after a lot of research and one of the reasons I went with an 06. I took note of the serial number of the motor, M96/2561605638, and verified the build date of January 2006.
I still got a warranty just in case.

Brakes and speakers
Gave the front new rotors, pads and sensors and installed the alpine speakers up front. Okay it wasn't today it was a few days ago and it took me a couple of days to get it done. For some reason the photo rotates when I upload it.

Nice. How do the alpines sound up front and which model did you go with? I have a pair of alpines I am going to replace the dash speakers with and also got the rear speaker kit to install. Hopefully will get going on that soon.

I used the Alpine SPS-410 and followed the DIY video on using the old speaker mounting ring. Sounds so much better.
