Hi Maytag. It was a great day, thanks. We’re Zone 1, Hudson Valley Region, NY

Went for an early morning run up the mountains. Beautiful in the early autumn sun.

The 986 was built for these narrow twisty undulating roads, effortless driving and just magic the way it flows along them, you can’t help but smile. Good for the soul!!

This was during our "transition period" from BMW to Porsche/Audi. At the time this was taken, we also had a white X3 (which replaced our black X5) and about a year prior bought a A6. Since this time, the Boxster replaced the Z4, the X3 was replaced by a Q5 and we swapped the A6 for a S5...but it's still white. :)

Did my first autocross yesterday with PCA Central Wisconsin. Took me awhile to figure out what I was doing, but the experienced guys were all really helpful. After this, I feel like the best performance mod I could do to my car would be a short shifter.

Got a video with my tow hook-mounted camera:

Bald Eagle 09-24-2018 12:22 PM

Started my (sob!) annual "start getting ready for winter storage" routine... washed and waxed it well, gazed at it in admiration, conditioned the leather on a beautiful, cool clear day so, when it comes out of storage the end of March, I won't need to do all that when the weather will probably be nasty. Next step is a very thorough interior detail. Then all I'll need to do the last week in October is add Stabil to the gas tank, pump up the tires, and drive it to the storage facility I use where I will gaze at it lovingly one last time, take out the battery, cover it and put the battery on the maintainer at home and start crossing out the days until takeout day.

New shoes, the Michelin PS just do not last. Went with a set of Falken Ziex ZE950 AS since they are suppose to last over 40k miles, which at the rate I drive my 986 could be well over 20 years...

Lets see how they last on the track!

P_Carfahrer 09-29-2018 12:27 PM

What did you do with/to your Boxster today?

Got my 2001 S cluster leds swapped out to blue. I hated the stock orange/yellow color. Just have the seat control switch box to finish my interior color swap.

I did pull a shaft out of my speedo stepper motor and had to solder a new motor on the board after finding where to buy one online.

Hardest part was getting the needles positioned right on re-assembly.

I got a 996 cluster still in the box from somebody on eBay for cheap and want to change the leds out but thought I should try getting it done on the 986 cluster first.

Thanks particlewave for your posts on the subject.

Well done on the blue LEDs in your gauges, they look awesome!

Pdwight 09-29-2018 03:06 PM

Felt bad for it

It is up on jack stands waiting for a new water pump and AOS and control arms....tires and a 4 wheel alignment......working two jobs and never any time

All the parts just sitting there next to it.......Sad

I need to start thinking about changing my AOS, I know it's coming... Any words of wisdom to us who are not looking forward to it? Is it easier to get to it by removing the front engine panel?

I didn't remove the front panel. I did it from the top and bottom. I took off the top hose from the top. I did the bottom hose, the bellows and the bolts from the bottom. I jacked it up and took the wheel off. I removed the AOS from the top. Then just reverse order to put the new one in. It's a PITA for sure, it took me like 3 hours to do the AOS, purge valve and oil change. Have fun.

As Tommy said, access is from the top and bottom, nothing to gain by removing the front access panel. Be careful with the squeeze connectors on the AOS plastic hoses, they can be brittle. I have a thread on this somewhere in the tech and perf topic IIRC. You should be able to find my post along with many others regarding the AOS replacement through the search function. Also, there are some videos on utube.

Got my 01 S a Hard Top

After searching for almost 6 month on CL, I found the hardtop and in the right color.
Thanks to Tony for hooking me up with a pristine top, with the ski roof mount option.

Got lucky finding this on CL.

Ready for the winter now. Ready to go. :):) http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1538884093.jpg

rexcramer 10-07-2018 05:09 PM

Congrats, I really enjoy my hardtop. It feels like a different car with it on.

P_Carfahrer 10-07-2018 06:45 PM

Hardtop is awesome! I would love to find one locally to use to make a mold for a carbon fiber one and then make one. I need one to put on for track days I plan to do next year.

The change to my LEDs I posted a week or so ago was done in practice for changing the LEDs in a never installed 996 cluster I got from eBay a few months ago.

Over the last days I finished the LEDs, got the new cluster programmed and coded, and swapped in to replace my recently color changed 986 cluster.

Absolutely love the 996 cluster and the pics don’t do the blue justice.

As a side, I now have a LED color changed, low mile gen 2 986 cluster that needs a new home.

I purchased a 996 surround also from eBay and painted it and the steering column cover Seal Gray to match my console.

Accepted the return of Fall and the PNW rainy season by re-installing my hardtop.http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1539019183.jpg

Feels like a different car with the hardtop on. On my first drive with the hardtop re-installed I had two different people ask "what kind of car is that?" obviously not Porsche people.
One was a woman who thought the car was "cute", that really hurt....

That's not right. They should come on any time the door is opened (same as the overhead light).

I'm pretty sure the set I linked will fit the 986. The outer shape is just slightly different. I've never seen any direct replacements for the 986.

Edit: looks like the connector is different, but that's not an actual problem. ;)

One was a woman who thought the car was "cute", that really hurt....

I heard a middle aged woman saying ‘look cute little car’ to her family as walking by... at least my top was up so I pretended I never heard it.

My hardtop will be on the car in a few weeks too, along with dedicated snow tires. Yes, as much as I like top-down open driving, I also like secure, quieter and warmer feel of hardtop in cold weather... not mentioning its looks with round roof line true to inspiration from 550. I’m gonna take out the soft top assembly to replace rear plastic window over this winter. I may take the motor/ transmissions out too and go manual to save weight and ensure Boxster chop as routine process on new vinyl next summer.

Boxstard 10-11-2018 07:28 PM

Worked out treadwear warranty to replace back tires, 45K warranty Michelin PSAS3 worn out in less than 2 years/ 15K but I drive like I’m stealing the car... will enjoy a few more weeks of spirited driving before mounting snow tires.

Changed oil while the car was up on jacks to replace rear tires, easy access. Used a brand new plastic oil filter housing replacing the original. It came with an OEM filter and it costed almost the same as only an aftermarket filter. Gutted the old filter and no metallic or plastic debris on pleats so I’d sleep better.

Oh not today but also put a lightweight Deka battery, saving 13 lbs. Hope it works through Michigan winter.

rick3000 10-12-2018 02:09 PM

Purchased twelve quarts of Castrol Edge 10W-40 on Amazon for $50, which is about half of what I normally pay.
Deal is still active if anyone else uses that oil, which is something of a forum favorite based on past posts.
