I'll have to unearth the issue of Excellence, but I remember very clearly that it said that a tiptronic transmission shaves power in between shifts, resulting in a loss of torque( vs. Manual Trans). It could be that the TC does in fact multiply the torque but (according to Excellence) it's still less torque overall than what you would get manually shifting where there is no shaving of power.

Its the Excellence issue "rating the best Porsche convertibles" .

Hi,

I'm still unclear as to what you mean. If you mean that the TipS robs some HP, well I agree, with some exception. Any Automatic Transmission has some Parasitic Loss associated with it simply because it draws Crank power to run the TC pump and the Servos in the Tranny. That said, Porsche adds about 8HP to the TipS cars over the Manual ones to make up for this Parasitic Loss, so there should be no Net effect.

But, your initial post mentioned robbing Torque which isn't the same thing as Power which you now state. In either event, I think I've addressed the issue, as has Porsche.

I think that if Porsche had completely addressed the issue, then the Excellence contributor wouldn't have cited the tip power/torque reduction as a reason to opt for the manual S vs. the tip.

I have no experience driving a tip. BUt I have driven paddles and I can say that these are inventions of the Devil which have ruined motorsports. But Great if you're an older guy or have physical limitations.
Hopefully someday I'll find that Ferrari 360 coupe with NO paddles.

Where in the post did it say Boxsters aren't Sports cars?

Well, all I can say is that the contributor is either very biased or wrong, or both.

Auto Boxes are not lower in torque than their Manual counterparts and Porsche does Up the horsepower of the TipS cars. These are not opinion, they are fact. I'll be happy to dig out the sources, though it may take me a day or two.

A lot of people in the Enthusiast World (in the General Public for that matter) tend to lean toward conformity. The reigning opinion is that a Manual is everything and an Auto Box is Trash. Because of this, many people form an opinion which is safe, but maybe without objectively looking at all the facts. Of course, the gearbox is just a part of a Sports Car and the Boxster experience. Top speed difference is minimal 2-3MPH and the 0-60 times are very close as well. But, either will give you the Boxster experience, and in several categories, the TipS wins out. So, it all boils down to what you prefer. One caveat though, if you haven't driven both, you have no basis to form an opinion either way.

I have driven both for several years.

I like them both, depending on my mood.

If I feeling frisky that day, I like the six speed.

If I am mellow or am going to sit in traffic, the tip rules.

The Tip is a very good manumatic BTW.

I agree with all that you say here. They are both good, but for different reasons. I own 5 cars and 4 of them are Manuals. I find it very refreshing to jump into the Boxster and let the Box do my thinking. I certainly don't enjoy the car any less than any of my others. If I get the penchant to shift, all I have to do is jump into some different Sheet Metal to do it.

I don't think the Contributor is biased. He might be wrong but its consistent with everything I've heard of from the track where drivers complain of a lag between shifts in the tip.
I'll have to find a tipS this weekend and try it out.
