California Vacation Update!

I'm in the midst of our driving vacation to California and it's been great thus far. The 1997 boxster in which we are travelling has been VERY dependable... even in Arizona temps of 106 degrees. No overheating and little to no oil burning whatsoever at 2500 miles thus far!

The drive up PCH (Hwy 1 in California) was SPLENDID, especially the 2 hours of spirited back and forth driving around curves north of San Simeon to Monterey Bay. Outrageous driving experience! The mid engine really shined and I pushed every single driver ahead of me to the side of the road and no one could keep up!

Yosemite was also filled with twisties and yeilded hours and hours of driving fun!

Below are two pics. One is me by the box on a Pacific Coast Highway turnout, and the other is a shot of the boxster in Yosemite today.

Tomorrow we leave early (4 am) for Las Vegas to beat the heat in Death Valley. Then it's off to the Grand Canyon for a look at America's biggest hole. I'll post more pix later, but though you all would like to have a quick pictoral update.

My car and this road trip rocks!

That is a great stretch of road north of San Simeon. Best of luck on the rest of your trip!

Wow, that looks fantastic - I'm very envious of your long trip, especially in the beautiful weather!

On Friday my wife and I will be driving in the Boxster up from Liverpool to Newcastle (3hrs), and catching a 24hr ferry ride to Norway. Once we arrive in Bergen, we're meeting some friends who live in Denmark, and spending some time touring around the Norwiegan fjords and mountains. I just hope the weather is good.

I'll take plenty of photos and post some when we get back!

I'm envious. I lived in Monterey for a year (1986-7) - great place and fantastic scenery. The piece of 101 from Big Sur up to Monterey is beautiful. The historic races at Laguna Seca are in August sometime too, I think.

Randall,

Glad you're having a great trip.

I love the drive up PCH from Santa Barbara through Big Sur to Monterey.

If you make that trip, don't miss the hundreds of elephant seals in their natural habitat on the beach just a couple miles north of San Simeon.

The beach is called Piedras Blancas, but you can't see the seals unless you pull over and walk up the bluff. You usually can tell you're at the spot by the number of other cars that have pulled to the side of the road.

Google "San Simeon elephant seals" and you'll get hits such as these:
