Transmission Fluid 01 986 S 6-spd.

What are my options for transmission fluid on my 01' 986 S it has a 6-spd with 65k on it.

I have a 987 shifter, and HATE the feel that the swepco 201 gave it. On cold starts the transmission is a pain to shift until it's warmed up.

Can anyone recommend a good alternative to the OEM stuff?

Couple of points:

1. Swepco is not the OEM fill.
2. Porsche uses a unique spec for their gear oil; so unusual that a couple of major manufacturer’s have actually said they have no direct match for it.
3. Several small time blender’s claim to have a match; they don’t.
4. We have had customer’s try just about everything out there; nothing shifts as well as the OEM fill.
5. Several customer’s that have tried other products and encountered poor shifting, noise, etc. all had their problems go away when the car was switched back to the OEM fill.
6. The OEM fill is a bit more expensive, but it is a full synthetic, and it works.

Whats the cost of the OEM one per quart/litre?

The price we pay for the shop would not be relevant (we get it in larger containers), but retail is in the $20 per quart range.

I used Red Line 75W90NS at $12.50 a pint (used 3) and it works very well. My parts guy at the Porsche department was going to sell me factory at twice that I think. If you have the cash I agree with JFP use the factory stuff. I've heard many folks say it is the best. I have not had any issues at all with the Red Line and it shifts great. Took about 300 miles to smooth out the shifting.

On your 'Cold starts" what is the temp, I know before I changed mine it was very hard to shift below 50 degrees out...once the car warmed up it was ok though.

I used the same Red Line in both of my Boxsters. It is a full synthetic. Works just fine in the Base 5 speed and S 6 speed. Paid $11.50 per quart. Bought 6 quarts. It is a GL4 product as Porsche requires.
